I was just denied coverage for a wisdom tooth extraction by my insurance. Now what?
I'm pretty confused, so bear with me here.

Last month I had my upper left wisdom tooth removed. It was coming in sideways and impacted, causing me great pain. A few days later I got a letter basically saying I would need to have x-rays done so that my insurance could determine whether or not it'd be covered. Now, 4 weeks later, I get paperwork saying coverage has been denied. The only reason I've been given is that it is "Not a covered service".

Mind you, this is NOT the first wisdom tooth I've had pulled. The first one was covered in full, and the dentist's office even says I have a $3 credit to my account for a copay at some point.

I have Fidelis Care, as well as Medicaid. What I was told that I'm supposed to use Medicaid first, and if they don't cover it, Fidelis should. But when I went to my dentist's office last month, the receptionist told me they only take the Fidelis card now (before, they took both). My Medicaid ID number is on that card as well.

Could it be that they tried using the wrong insurance for coverage, or am I really going to have to pay this bill now? There's no way I can afford this, and it was my understanding that it would all be covered for me.

If anyone has any advice that might be helpful, please do share. Thanks so much in advance =]

It IS covered, that's the problem. The only time my insurance (medicaid) does NOT cover is if it is cosmetic, which this obviously wasn't. The tooth has already been pulled, btw.

If dental isn't covered, than please explain to me why they paid for the first one?!

In general, extraction of a tooth that is either full bony or partial bony impacted would fall under a medical/surgical benefit.

(Note that I said "in general." Some group out there somewhere could decide to exclude all extractions regardless of impaction. But the norm is for it to be impacted.)

You said that your tooth was impacted, correct? My next question would be...is your insurance company aware that it was impacted? When a dentist/oral surgeon sends in a claim form or a pre-approval request, they usually include a diagnosis code. Impacted teeth have a different diagnosis code than "regular" teeth. Sometimes a denial can be something as simple as a wrong code being listed on a claim.

That's the first thing I'd do - make sure the insurer was aware that it was an impacted tooth.

What state are you located in? I can try looking up the Medicaid coverage in your state to confirm whether an impacted extraction should be covered. (Please also note if you're in a managed Medicaid plan or just in regular Medicaid.)

Since you said that Medicaid paid for the first tooth, and now you dentist doesn't accept Medicaid, my advice would be to find another dentist that does accept Medicaid payments.

Daylight robbery, bastards, probably because they regard it as a cosmetic non emergency procedure.Appeal, tho it's almost impossible to win against the "establishment",rage against the machine, create some chaos, you might get partial financial assistance.

Nope, I don't think they billed it wrong, I think that dental services aren't covered.

Sorry.

Get it yanked out and pay them later. If it's really bad go to Emergency at the hospital. If you're financilly strapped go to the university or social services.
There is always help somewhere
