First of all..I must say that you must be bored. General Insurance is a subject of study that only if you want a career in is viable. I have been in it for 37 years. been there....done it.
I would attend a class first at your local area tech college. On general insurance ...choose your emphasis whether it be Life/Health or property /casualty. This will help you decide and the tutor can recommend good reading on the subject.Their are a vast number of texts out there. Start with the basics . Go to first base .

There may be several insurance schools in your area. Your best bet would be to contact your agent and get recommendations from him. You could first get a job in the industry to see if you like it. Many agents will take a new person under their wing and show them the ropes.
