I would like to get two guaranteed life insurance policies on my dad. Can I do this?
My fathers doctor told him five years ago if he did not quit smoking, he would be dead within three years. Well, my dad is alive and kicking, He has COPD really bad and I don't think he will last but a couple more years. Maybe five years tops. Anyway, there are a lot of companies offering no questions / no health checkup life insurance. The most I can find is $50,000. Would it be unlawful for me to get two sets of life insurance at $50k each? I really don't know anything about these life insurance companies. Is there a short period he would have to live through in order to collect? He isn't going to die in the next year... but I am thinking a year is all he has left.

Read the fine print very carefully. These policies are " limited benefit."
Many times, if death occurs with in a certain amount of time after the policy is issued,. and it is from a condition which existed before the policy was issued, their only liability will be the return of any premiums you may have paid.

This may be possible. You have to declare to all the companies you are applying with that you plan on taking the other policy too. Your dad will need to give his permission to be insured with you as the policy owner. As mentioned before, you usually won't receive a full payout until a few years after the policies are issued - read and understand your policies. When you look at the numbers, it might not be as attractive as you once thought.

And yes, the maximum amount most insurers will do for this is $50k each, although some have lower limits.

Your plan is unrealistic.

I haven't seen any companies that let you stack guaranteed issue policies higher than a combined $25,000.

It's not illegal to buy as many as you can get. BUT, you have to DECLARE them to the other companies, AND, each usually has a "maximum total of policies". Also, the "short period" he has to live through in order to collect, is either two or three years. I've never seen one shorter than 24 months - meaning, 24 payments from you.
