Probably nothing you can do. I don't think it's IBM anyway. It's the insurance carrier that's charging you through IBM.
Statistically, about 80% of your health care dollars are spent in the last 20% of your life. The insurance company is trying to get the 80% of your health care dollars before you reach the 20% age point in your life. This way, your health care doesn't cost them anything. You're self-insured. In my case, if I went with my employer's plan, I'd be paying $800 per month (retired @ 57, family = wife, no children). In 8 years, I'd have paid $76,800.
Also, believe it or not, a family with a bunch of kids doesn't cost as much to treat as an elderly person with medical conditions. Sniffles and childhood diseases are relatively easy and cheap to treat. |

What do you consider outrageous? My uncle is retired from IBM, and not 65, and he pays $1,000 a month for his health insurance for him and his wife - much, much cheaper than he could get a private policy for.
Your alternative is, of course, the private market. You can talk to a local agent, and get a few options - which would include high deductible plans with HSA's, in addition to traditional low deductible high cost insurance plans. |

Have you looked for low cost health insurance with an independent company in your area. Check the phone book and even do a google search for different insurance companies. I have seen low cost insurance advertised on TV. Have you checked out Blue Cross, if they are in your area?
Don't you just hate how they treat people that are pre 65? It's like your not even a person. |
