If you approach the career as 'selling' then it will be difficult for you.
If you approach the career as a 'financial advisor' and really learn the ins and outs of insurance and financial services you will be able to show people who need your help how to use their monies wisely for investment and income protection.

Then it becomes easier. The Insurance & Financial Services Industry is one of the few recession proof careers left today.
The opportunities for ' financial coaches ' are becoming greater and greater in the world.
People are looking for someone to coach them with their finances and to get out of debt.

A good career opportunity? Possibly.
A good career move? Very subjective.

Let's say that you will not be building your resume if you go into insurance sales, but there is an opportunity, even if very few actually make it.

the real key to success in this branch is to not only sell life insurance, but home, auto, and work that relationship to push mutual funds.

I've worked in the insurance business in a non-sales capacity, and that's the book of business most of our successful reps run.

Sales is more than just talking though its about building relationships and closing deals. The best salespeople though stay away from insurance and go into other stuff like selling services corp to corp.

Selling isn't for evryone, basically if you ever enjoyed having a sales job, are use to making no money unless you sell, can live with working real hard, then it's for you.

In reality, no selling job is worthwhile. You can talk your mouth dry and not make a sale, and the door is always getting slammed in you face.Salespeople are as much a pariah as lawyers.

All commission, if you are a good salesperson you can make some $$$

Only a life insurance salesman can tell you one way or the other. FWIW, there are very few insurance specialists, these days; it simply isn't profitable (for the agent or his company) to cater to one segment of the industry. The rest of us can only share horror stories over being "trapped" in a discussion with a life insurance salesman! ;)

Regardless, while it's not that difficult to get such a job, finding someone to sponsor or hire you is, so keep that in mind!

Good luck!

Mr. Prefect
If you are young, with lots of friends, a large family, great neighbors, belong to organizations, church, socials, maybe volunteer groups, etc. then go for it, as you will be advised to start with the people you know.
If any of the above is not you, then expect to cold call, and hate life doing it.

Only if you can sell, and are willing and able to work very long work weeks (60 - 80 hours)

You'll get all kinds of answers, and the only way to know is if you try it.

First, you should research licensing requirements in your state. Usually you have to take a state required exam to sell life insurance. Check out your state's department of insurance for requirements. The company hiring you may pay to have you take the exams and get you started.

Check out Million Dollar Round Table, http://www.mdrt.org for info on successful professional insurance agents. It can be a challenging business, but you can make a tremendous living selling life insurance.

A couple of the best life insurance companies to sell for are New York Life and Northwestern Mutual Life.

It depends on if you are an independent agent or work for a corp. Independent agents get paid on commission. Most corporations now pay a base salary plus commission. If you have a good book of business or are willing to work hard it can be lucrative. It also depends on where you live. If in Michigan, the outlook isn't as good as say Arizona. Economy will play a huge role.
