If I get insured on a my dads car with comprehensive cover does that include third party cover?
So if I buy a new car can I drive it back to my house as I am insured third party?

Geoff the skier
If you are a named driver on a policy covering one car belonging to someone else (i.e. your dad) no, I'm afraid that you are not insured to drive any other vehicle.

lucy c
if you get insured on your dads car then that will only cover you for your dads car not another car as you will only be an additional named driver, you have to have your own insurance and be the policy holder with fully comp to drive another car third party. many insurance companies work like this just double check with them if you are not sure.

Bronners
if the insurance policy on your dads car is in your name, as a comprehensive policy, you *should* be covered 3rd party on another car. this does vary from policy to policy, so it would be worth checking.

If you are a named driver on your dads comprehensive policy, for his car, then no you would not ordinarily be insured 3rd party on a second vehicle

John D
Depends on the terms of the policy, but generally NO! The third party rule usually only applies to the first named driver on any policy. All other drivers on that policy are not covered third party on any other vehicle. In any event the third party rule usually only applies when the car is not owned by you. So even the first named driver would not be covered if he bought a new car and did not transfer cover.

You better check your policy. All these answers may be wrong. You are calling it third party but the terms are usually "named insured" or "permissive use. Name insured covers only the person named on the policy. Permissive use means anyone is allowed to drive your car if you give them permission.

Check your policy or call your agent.

COLIN T
The people telling you that you are not insured to drive anything other than your dads car are correct. The obvious answer for your perceived need is that you go with your dad in his car to pick up one you buy. You drive dads car home, dad drives the one you have bought because he is insured to drive other vehicles.

glencat67
no if you are just the named driver then you will not have third party cover to drive other cars. only the policy holder gets this and only within age brackets and some companies do not do it at all so check the policy wording
