susan | If I get pregnant the month before maternity insurance is active will I still be covered? |
I have an individual plan with my husband for BCBS of IL. I have to wait 12 months for my maternity insurance to become active. If I was to become pregnant the month (approx. 1-2 weeks) before my coverage was in effect would I run into any issues in regards to it being a pre-existing condition? Additional Details How would the insurance company honestly be able to tell the exact time that you conceived if it was only a question of 7 days? I wouldn't be going in until my 8th-10th week for my first check up which would be well past my start of my coverage. |

They don't go by the actual date of conception (since no one could obviously know this). They go by the date of delivery and estimate a date of conception.
This means that sometimes a person who conceives right around the "right" time (according to when the maternity waiting period is over) can sometimes run into problems if she delivers her baby early.
If you have a baby immediately after an individual maternity plan begins, be prepared to have your medical records scrutinized. They may be able to "catch" you based on your records, but your chances of not getting caught are better if its only a matter of days. However, they will certainly review all of your medical records to see if there is any evidence that you conceived prior to the policy beginning. (And if your baby comes early, it will definitely look suspicious too.) |

No, you cannot do that. If you do the company will not cover your pregnancy. Why can't you wait one or two weeks? Are you already pregnant? If you are they will find out from your medical records. If they even have the slightest inkling that you were pregnant before your maternity rider started they will not cover your pregnancy. And if you try and fight them, you will lose. It's also called insurance fraud. Don't do it. |

If the insurance company determines you conceived prior to the preexisting clause ending, then no you will not be covered.
That is what the preexisting clause is for.
Sorry. |

I was caught out with that changing hospital funds, it is considered a preexisiting condition and you're not covered. |

Yes. You have to wait 12 full months before conception before coverage kicks in.
If it's 7 days, likely they'll go by the conception date as calculated by your ultrasound.
If you want to bet $10,000 in expenses on the ultrasound results, well, that's your money. Or, you can just wait another month, and play it safe. |

If it's only one or two days, then you shouldn't be worried bout it.
Even doctors won't tell you for sure on which day concieved, they can only give approximate information.
A month makes a big difference they can easily prove that you concieved a month before your insurance plan was active. |
