Linda S | If I sell a $1000 auto policy and my commission rate is 25%, does that mean I get $250? |
I have my P&C insurance license and a potential employer told me my commission rate will be 25%. I'm new to the industry and I don't know how the commission works.
So, if I sell a $1000 auto policy and my commission rate is 25%, does that mean I get $250? Is it all at once or what? I'm getting hourly+25% commission. |

Will your contract be a direct contract, or will you be working for an established agency?
If you are contemplating working for an agency, I believe that in addition to your salary, you would get 25% of the commission. So, if the policy premium was $1000, and the commission was 15%, you would get 25% of that, or $37.50.
$1000 X 15% = $150.00 X 25% = $37.50
Twenty-five percent on an auto policy would be pie in the sky.
But, if your potential employer is Allstate, and they are contracting you as their agent, they have a plan for new agents that could pay 25% commission your first year, then decreasing commissions over a three or five? year period as your agency grows. |

OK, I"m pretty sure he means, you keep 25% of the COMMISSION on the policy. Because there's NO COMPANY that pays 25% commission on auo policies.
That $1,000 auto policy is going to pay MAYBE 15% commission - at best. At worst, 8%, depending on the carrier. That means $150, at best. Then you'd keep 25% of it - $38 or some such. |

The commission is 25% of the premium amount, not 25% of the policy amount.. Whether it's all at once, or in installments depends upon what kind of agreement you have with the company.
Don't be hesitant to ask these question of your employer. For your own protection, you should understand how your compensation is figured. |

No. You have to take into the account that the company you work for has to get commission too. And you would get a percentage of that.
And first of all, 25% commission is a too-good-to-be-true deal. Get it in writing. Most carriers pay a "new" business commission, anywhere from 5-20% (to the agency, which you have to share) and then they pay a lower "renewal" commission. Get more information on how they pay commission, and what type of business you get it for. |

Just like they siad you will not make tha tmuch, i work for a brokerage that on auto commision makes a little less then that and i get a small chunk of it for my commision. I also have a salary so it is a little more secure. If you want to make good money get a total sale so AUTO,HOME, ETC. Home will pay much better percentage. Just hangin insurance isnt a get rich quick job but you will always go up in wage and that is a comfort at night. |
