If a dependent child commits suicide while under a life insurance policy, does it still pay?
I've been checking around to see whether life insurance policies pay out for suicide, and it says that usually the catch is that they don't until two years after the establishment of the plan. So if the plan is established at the child's birth, and the child is 21 years of age at the time but still counts as a dependent to their parents, would the parents receive any life insurance money if the child committed suicide -- and it was ruled suicide?

And yes, the child in question is me, I'm not thinking about killing my kids or anything. I just don't want my parents to get stuck with a bunch of burial fees and crap. Also, do student loans (set up in the student's name only, not the parents') still count for a deceased student?
Additional Details
I'm not thinking about this to avoid student loan money.

I'm bipolar, and have been since I was eleven. It was crappy when I was a kid, very crappy when I was a teenager, and straight up horrifying after I turned 18. Last year landed me in the psych ward twice for a cumulative nine days or so, during which I found out that not only am I bipolar, type 2, but I have a lovely touch of OCD (hence self-mutilation scars since the age of seven) and some level of anxiety disorder.

So this all works together to make working and going to school a living hell because some days I honestly cannot leave the house, or the bed -- or actually sleep in the bed -- I have to sleep on the couch because my brain won't let me sleep in the bed. And it's one thing after another, something every fricking day -- if I'm not having a panic attack and attacking my arms with a soda can, my financial aid office is taking my finaid away, and my parents can't afford to help.

One: Suicide is never a choice that any parent would find acceptable for their child. EVER.

Two: There are much worse things in life than having to pay off student loans for an extended period of time (and believe me, I'll be paying on MINE until I'm in my sixties unless I make an enormous salary all of a sudden!) It may seem impossible now to face a future with the problems you have today, but change is not only possible -- it is a fact of life. Things WILL change -- maybe not immediately, maybe not even in a VISIBLE way, but given time...anything is possible.

Three: You've potentially eliminated the option to receive the suicide death benefit by using the answering forum on Yahoo. Pre-meditation of the act in a public forum like this could be found by insurance investigators and it (along with other indications you've unconsciously demonstrated to friends, family, teachers) might permit the insurance company to escape payment -- that your decision was not in fact based on emotional distress but a decision to eliminate debt.

Four: What do you think your parents would feel like if they had to USE money from an insurance policy to bury you -- especially if you had committed suicide?

Do yourself and your family a favor: TALK to someone. A young man in my highschool killed himself -- the only thing that happened was that everyone around him (friends, family, teachers) wondered what they could have done to prevent him from doing it.

Talk to your parents. Talk to a teacher. Talk to the school nurse, a guidance counselor, a pastor, a best friend -- JUST TALK TO SOMEONE. Give someone else the chance to help you -- and ALLOW them to do what they can to get you the best help available.

Later: Hey. I've been there. I was misdiagnosed bipolar several years ago AFTER I was misdiagnosed ADHD and prescribed Ritalin. I couldn't get my head to shut up, I spent hours sitting in the CJC (Criminal Justice Center) Night Court public seating because if anything happened to me (or I was worried something would happen to someone else around me), I wanted to be near somewhere people would act immediately. I spent way too much money, was divorced within the year, lost jobs...you name it!

I know that cutting gives you a sense of control. It cuts down on the noise, too...everything gets focused on that feeling once you've got something sharp and the endorphins kick in from the lacerations. It's obvious things have gotten beyond your ability to manage effectively without some serious intervention (and you've obviously been in hospital for the most effective intervention available to you). Find another stimulation activity -- I spent time ripping colored paper into bits and trying to make faces or images out of them. (No scissors, obviously...)

It took about 2 1/2 years before I was distant enough from the situation (off Ritalin, stable on meds, no manic phases during all that time -- still some depressive episodes, but nothing like before) to see that however bad things had been, most of the worst of it was that inner critic -- that voice that finds fault with everything, assures you of your flaws and failures, and basically manages to stomp on your hopes and successes in every way imaginable.

If you aren't journaling, I recommend it. You can visibly see where things are better or worse, and it made a difference in my situation. Nothing shuts up that inner critic like finding words you wrote yourself about successes and days when you felt good.

For me, at least, I had to accept and move forward with small victories: I got out of bed before 10 AM. I was able to eat a real meal. I didn't watch movies until 0300. I was able to bathe, dress, and at least try doing something self-caring or constructive without losing it at someone else.

There's nothing worse that someone telling you what worked for them and then expecting you to miraculously absorb or read it and then have recovery or simply a more positive attitude -- so I'm not going to pretend things wouldn't suck now (and for a while), but someone, SOMEWHERE near you cares and is trying to be as supportive as they know how.

Give them the chance to face the music with you, please.

The most immediate step (other than continuing whatever meds and therapy that have been prescribed to you) I can recommend to keep the creditors from coming after you is to declare bankruptcy. It's not a picnic, but you'll at least have a legal protection against people calling the house and bugging the %$!# out of you.

Have you ever known anyone who has commited suicide? Ever heard of anyone doing this? Have you seen what it does to their family? Parents roll the thought of why their child did it over, and over, and over in their mind's. What did I do to fail my child? Why didn't I see this coming? What could I have done to help my child, to prevent this? Children that grow up having one or more parents commit suicide, have a stimga attached to them. Wondering if they may do the same thing someday. Wondering why their parent/s did it, and wondering what other people may think about them. It comes out with the person who commits suicide is totally selfish, and not 'doing the world a favor', as they would believe. I had a close friend who committed suicide 8yr's ago. He had separated from his wife. They thought they needed space, to sort thing's out. After 8 month's he could no longer take the separation, and wanted to get back together. She said no, they needed to wait longer. He committed suicide with a gun, while he was talking over the phone to her. I was working in another city while this was transpiring, and could only talk to him over the phone. He never indicated that taking his own life was ever on his mind. EVER! I would have given my job up, and helped him through this, if I had of known. There is always a chance to do better. ALWAYS! No matter what life throws at us, we can find a way to make it through the bad times. Last year in June I was diagnoised with a mass in my lower left lung. I underwent surgery and had the lower lobe removed. They found that it was Valley Fever, that made the mass. It was contained, and so far hasn't spread. I didn't think of suicide then, but I was getting ready for 'Check Out' time! Getting all my affairs in order. Now that I know I'm okay, I think, "Hey, the person who said you need to live every day like it's going to be your last, was right!!" LIVE LIFE, don't just drift through it! If something is getting you down, or you just can't see your way out of a bad situation, get pissed, and make a CHANGE! There IS a way! Trust me! I'm a survivor of 'Nam. Learned that you're not taking me out, until I've drawn my last breath! I'll be fighting to the death, trying to survive. Suicide? Ha! There's NOTHIN' worth committing suicide over. You want me gone, you'll have to do it, I'm not! That's just the way I think. I hope you'll reconsider your plan, get up, and make a positive change in your life. When? RIGHT NOW! Call the Suicide Hotline, talk to your church, get help. Remember. You are loved!

don't do this... you aren't doing your family any favors by researching life insurance coverage. what they need is you. if you're still here they won't need burial fees. GET HELP IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!

First and foremost, get help. Those that think about suicide in this regard, could use some kind of help. Especially those that say they are not thinking about it. And they would still be stuck with the bills associated with burial.

It's past the 2 year contestability period so it would pay. Student Loans are like any other loan. If only one person on the loan and they die, they go to the estate. If the estate can't pay, they lose.

----

After reading the updates you posted. Seriously get help. There is medication you can take for bipolar disorder. My friend has it. Suicide is NEVER an option. You do that and your folks will think they did something wrong raising you. It will spin them into depression, psychiatric help, lots of drugs. Do you really want that for them? If you care about them, seek help NOW.

As for your job and landlord, they are there to run a business. It has nothing to do about whether they care or not. They can only work with you so far before having to move on.

Above all else, like everyone below is saying, GET HELP NOW!!!!!

Sounds like you're talking about a long term solution to a short term problem. If you're concerned about burdening your parents, why don't you talk to them about your situation? I'm sure they could decide quickly which burden they would rather shoulder.
