Yes. First you must have a Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP's), also known as a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Having a CDHP allows you to open up a Health Savings Account (HSA) where you, and/or your employer, can contribute non taxable money for current or future medical expenses. With these plans everything is subject to the deductible, except your annual wellness benefit, which used to be called your annual physical. You are expected to pay for all of your medical services out of your own pocket (your HSA) until you reach your deductible, then the insurance kicks in. The advantage is that you will have a lower premium than you would with a traditional plan, and you will save money on taxes. Contact a local agent to help you find the best plan in your area. an HSA is nothing more than an IRA, you set it up with a bank. What you are looking for is probably an insurance that is HSA compatible. So you set up the HSA with a balance equal to that of the deductible on the insurance. So yea you can get an HSA on your own and you can set up a plan that is compatible with an HSA as well. An HSA basically works like a bank account you write checks or swipe a card off it to pay the Dr. once your deductible is met...the plan kicks in. An HSA/IRA is tax deductible. |

You can only set up and contribute to an HSA if you have an HSA qualified insurance plan. Most major insurance companies offer HSA qualified plans. Most of them will also help you set up the account or you can set up the account on your own at many banks. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget in a few minutes where it could take you days to find the best one on your own. There is no extra charge using an agent. |

VB has no idea what he/she's talking about. Companies don't negotiate rates for insurance. Individual coverage is the cheaper of the two coverages.
The 2nd reply is on that you need the qualified health plan prior to getting the savings account. You CANNOT have the savings account without the health plan. |

You can approach any major insurance company that offers and HSA/HDHP and sign up on your own--provided that you have no other medical insurance, aren't a dependent, are younger than 65 and are not currently signed up for medicare.
Unfortunately, the plans available to an individual without a company negotiating the rates (and paying some of it) are still expensive.
One comparison on the web showed that for a plan that would cost $600/month old coverage ($2000 deductible) would cost $400/month as an HDHP ($5000 deductible). |
