If i get home insurance will it cover a cat scratching my new sofa?
all answers are appreciated ive never had insurance

No. Sofa is contents, and contents are covered on a named perils basis. Damage by an animal isn't a named peril.

If it was part of the building, like the woodwork, the damage by an animal WOULD be covered, as long as 1. the animal is not owned by you, or in your care, custody, & control, and 2. the animal isn't excluded on your policy (like rodents and vermin - mice, rats, fleas, etc, no damage by them is covered.)

Apple
Generally, No. Meaning you may be able to find some quirky policy out there that would cover it, if you itemized it, but that would still be highly unlikely.

Most standard policies have exclusions for damage caused by animals (cat) that you keep.

Even if that would be covered under a policy, you'd be foolish to file a claim for something like that.

You'd still have to pay your deductible, and your premiums may go up for filing a claim.

So, you'd end up paying out of your own pocket for the damage anyhow...just with lots more paperwork and hassle.

(I doubt if it would be covered under any standard policy anyhow.)

No. You either need to declaw the cat, have his claws capped, or accept a tattered couch as a side effect of the pet. No insurance will cover cat clawing (other than maybe medical if it's you he claws).

No.

Contents coverage on a homeowners policy is named peril. There is no peril that I know of for your domestic animal damaging your furniture.

No one here has access to your policy wordings, so no one here can say yes or no for sure. You will either have to pull out your policy wordings and see if this is covered or specifically excluded, or call your broker/agent and ask them (this way you will get a 100% certain answer). If you do not yet have a policy look in the Yellow Pages for the numbers of a few brokers i your area and ask them if they sell a policy that includes this peril (or specifically excludes it).

Doubtful.
Besides you would have a deductible to pay first ...
better to just flip the cushion, cover the couch .... but please do NOT get your cat declawed it's very cruel !! (imagine what it would feel like if someone removed all your nails)
