If i get laid off, does my insurance still work until end of the month?
for example, if i get laid off on dec 1, can i still use my work insurance on dec 31?

thanks

.
As long as you have paid your premium for that month you will be covered until the last day of the month. Your employer should then offer you to continue your insurance by paying for it yourself (COBRA).

krollohare2
Yes, and I believe they have to offer you COBRA coverage soon. Unfortunately you will have to pay for the employer part as well as your contribution.

I would like to say no, but im not sure. You should call your HR manager. If they dont give you 30 days or more of notice that you are getting laid off i think you still get insurance. otherwise the insurance company will still insure but just not at you companies expence, but with a low copay. I hear this thing called COBRA google it. Other on answeres are saying that it insures you for 2 year.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events. Qualified individuals may be required to pay the entire premium for coverage up to 102 percent of the cost to the plan.

COBRA generally requires that group health plans sponsored by employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage (called continuation coverage) in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end.

COBRA outlines how employees and family members may elect continuation coverage. It also requires employers and plans to provide notice.

The date of coverage termination is determined between the employer and the insurance company when the policy is originally issued. The most common date used is the last day of the month in which employment ended- laid off 12/1 would have coverage thru 12/31.

The employer is required to notify you of COBRA options before your coverage lapses! Many companies provide this information and a separation notice (aka "pink slip") when they notify the employee of layoff/termination.

yes it should cover you for the rest of the month,..

Vickie May
That depends on the day of the month the premiums are paid to the Insurance by your company. Ex, if they pay it the 15th of every month will be good until the 15th of Dec. If they pay it the 1st to 1st chances are if they know they are laying you off that day they will not pay the premium for Dec. You need to talk to someone in your Human Resources Dept. To find out for sure .

You insurance will be transferred to COBRA for up to 2 years I think. Basically you will have all the same coverages as you had with your employer, however instead of your employer paying for all or some of the coverage you are now paying for everything.

Example--- I was working at a restaurant that had some awesome coverage and payed the majority of the tab. When I quit I still had the same coverage but insted of paying $50/month I was now paying $300/month.

No one here could know, because it depends on how your employer set the policy up. It could be until the end of the month of the last day in which you worked, or it could be the last day you worked.

Only your HR department can tell you for sure.

Yes, you have 30 days with most companies...you might want to ask your employer just to make sure you dont get stuck with crazy medical bills.
