Shebi | If i have one product insurance with two companies can i claim both? |
I lost a mobile phone. I have insurance from my bank and network provider, so can i claim from both of them? |
|

You can, but you'll still only get the same amount back (i.e what the 'phone is worth).... technically as previous have said they share the claim ...pay half each or whatever, but in reality you're just making work for them and you... they won't thank you for it.
Frankly it's just not worth your aggravation of filling out 2 claims forms to get the same money back... pick one and claim off of that. If there's an excess payable, pick the one with the lowest excess obviously.
If there's no difference in excess, and it's a choice between say 'phone' and 'home contents' insurance... claim off of the one with the lowest premium or the one that comes 'bundled' as part of an overall deal (probably network provider in this example) that way when they put your premium up next year for having made a claim it'll cost you the least... not strictly speaking how you should do things mind you... but I won't tell if you don't.
Don't try and claim twice however tempting it seems, there are shared claims databases everywhere these days so you will get caught and get a knock on the door from the boys in blue. Not worth it. |

Insurance works on indemnity, so you only get paid the value of what you have lost. If two companies are both liable to meet the claim, they pay half each. |

Insurance is designed to put you back to where you were prior to the loss. So... you can only be paid the value of the item and if you decide to put in a claim with both companies, they will only pay 1/2 of the value of the item each. At that point, you will be compensated for the loss of your phone's value; and you are not entitled to receive more than the value of the phone. Be very careful about "double dipping" for you may be referred to the states insurance "fraud" department. |

Its called double indemnity, and its illegal. If you try it you have a good chance of being caught. |

It depends upon the "other insurance" clause in each insurance contract. So long as you don't misrepresent anything, it is not fraud. If you paid a premium for each coverage type, and if they do not ask about other insurance, then it likely is not misrepresentation. If they do ask, and you lie, then it likely is. "Double indemnity" is a life insurance term and not relevant to this type of situation. |
