BEFORE you start making plans to go out of state -
1. call your health insurance plan. There should be an 800# on your card. Ask them if they will. Ask them how much they will pay, are there specific hospitals you have to go to and what has to be done.
They may pay -- but may consider it "out of network". That means - they will pay MUCH LESS than they would pay if you were at home "in network".
WE can't tell you what your health plan will do. Best to talk directly with the health plan yourself.
2. Then talk to your dr. Make sure he agrees with your plan to travel.
3. Research where hospitals are in the area you are going on on the way to and from. Have a list of hospitals - their addresses and phone numbers. That way-- it will be easier to get to a hospital if you go into labor. |

Come on.
Don't you think the particular insurance coverage you have will affect the answer?
Don't you think the right people to ask would be at your insurance company?
Take your insurance card, turn it over, call the customer service or claims phone number on the back, ask your question, write down the name of the person you talked to, ask where you can find the coverage details in writing, find that document, read it yourself and make certain what if says agrees with what you were told, if so put the document in a safe place, if not then call again. |

Depends on your plan. Some health insurance plans ONLY give emergency coverage out of area, making you responisible for the rest, but some cover anything. You really need to contact member services for your specific plan to ask them. (Also, ask them if there's a preferred hospital i the area so you can try to use it) |

i see this all the time. for the company i work for, regardless if its HMO or PPO, going into labor is considered to be a medical emergency - if you dont seek help, the condition could be life threatening. I have never seen a delivery that was covered at "out of network" rates or denied. Now, of course, if you "elect" to just randomly deliver out of state (im sure you wouldnt) thats a different story.
but yes, like everyone else has said, call your insurance company. |

Unless it's medicaid, it should pay, but most likely at "out of network" rates. That means, you'll be paying more out of pocket.
Medicaid really is limited to just your state, though, and won't pay if you leave. |
