If someone dies in a car accident, does the insurance rate for their family account still rise?

Additional Details
Assuming the person was at fault in the accident.

Well I work for an insurance company and the only honest answer is that there are so many factors that go into insurance rates that there is no hard and fast answer. First off every state regulates insurance differently and every company that operates in a state has to have policies and procedures for rating policies that comply with state insurance commissions. Next each company, after complying with state laws and regulations, has its own rating system. When a driver on a policy is "at-fault," the potential for a rate increase exists. On the other hand policies can be rated on the actual drivers who are being insured and thus if a driver who might be a bad risk was no longer a policy driver (in this case due to death) then that might not change the rating. Hope this helps

Dave
I'd love to see hard facts on this, but the cynical side of me says yes.

It can. Once an accident is on the policy, it is adjusted accordingly, even if the person who is at fault was removed (either voluntarily or by death). Many insurance companies adjust their rates based upon liability and the amount paid to other parties through your negligence.

However, other parts can go into this. If through their death, the car is totaled, and you get another car and drive it less, then your rates may drop.

who is the dead? yes it will rise if the person who's fault was it survives. and i really don't think there is any insurance that will forgive u for something so serious.on the other side if the person who died was part of the family of the one who crash i really not sure if the insurance will cover . if it doesn't i think is really sad and unjust . liability suppose to cover the other vehicle so i really don't think they will cover u in any way . i know that if the one who goes to the hospital is the one that crash liability will not help him on anything.

but if the dead is the person whose fault was it . there is no way they can blame or raise the family rate if they do they got a huge lawsuit against them and the family will win . that attitude from insurances is legally call "acting in bad faith" and it is punished very harshly. they can even get millions of dollars from that so they wouldn't do it.

Most definitely. The person was involved in an accident. Anytime you're involved in an accident or file a claim, the rate on your policy goes up.

R
i don't think so. When you go to redo your insurance the family member is no longer going to be a policy holder just the rest of the family and it goes off of their driving record not someone else

Depends on who's fault the accident was, what kind of insurance(liability or full coverage),and MANY other factors you didn't disclose.

i wouldn't think so... because at that time.. the "at fault" driver would no longer be on the insurance...

My experience with insurance companies from all ends of the spectrum tells me yes...... however there is an excepton to every rule. Unless you think or hope you know already that your insurance is up to "the best", you'll find out soon enough. LTB
