Wesley M | If someone doesn't list a preexisting condition, how can the Insurance Company find out? |
If someone was to apply for health insurance, but they did not list a minor preexisting condition, could the company find out about it? |

The Medical Information Bureau (MIB) is one of the sources that insurance companies use to verify your medical information, hazardous avocations or hobbies, even adverse information contained in your motor vehicle record. In addition by signing your application you authorize the insurance company to have access to your individual medical records and any other information they can obtain through underwriting.
Please note that if you fail to include pertinent underwriting information and the insurance company subsequently discovers that you omitted it they can decline to cover the claim/s, void the policy and/or even refer the matter for criminal prosecution as insurance fraud. Of course most of the time the harsher penalties are used in major cases but (imho) it is probably best not to take any chances and just be open & honest about everything. If you provide all the necessary underwriting information from the beginning and the condition is minor, the insurance company has a few options they can choose to handle the situation, i.e. they can opt to cover you anyway, they can issue the policy with a limitation that they will not cover X condition for a specific amount of time or not at all or they can choose not to offer you a policy. The upshot of handling the matter in this way is that you will not have to be worrying about having a coverage issue or if you will be discovered.
You can periodically check your record at MIB so that you can verify that the information is accurate. The website to find out more about MIB and to obtain the form to order a copy of your individual file is: http://www.mib.com/html/consumer_guide.html.
I hope this helps. Good Luck! |

When you sign up for a health insurance policy, you give your insurance company authorization to request and review your medical records.
If they ever had any reason to be suspicious of you, they could request copies of your charts from medical providers.
And, as someone else mentioned, they could also find information through the Medical Information Bureau, if it was documented there. |

If it's minor it probably won't matter. If you have ever seen a doctor about the condition then you might have a problem.... Keep in mind, if the insurance company pays for something you said was not a preexisting condition, you could be committing insurance fraud. |

It's called MIB record - or Medical Information Bureau. If you've had any serious illness, it's recorded in a history. Sort of like a credit history for your health.
Besides, the insurance company reserves the right to investigate any claims. Investigators are well-trained. I've seen them investigate someone dying from an anuerism, believe it or not. Seems pretty cut and dry, but they will find out, especially through autopsy if they have to, whether or not you could have been lying on your app. If so, your bene will be screwed, or the death benefit adjusted to subtract what you should have paid under the correct rating, assuming you would have been approved.
In either case, it doesn't pay to lie. |

Yes. There is a medical billing clearinghouse called the Medical Information Bureau, and they can find out about it through them.
Or, if they look at any of your prior medical records from your doctor. |
