If spouse is retired nypd and i am working full time, whose heath insurance is primary FOR HIM?
My husband is retired nypd and gets ghi health insurance through them. i am working full time at a public school and get family insurance thru them. i have been told that my insurance is primary for the whole family because i am employed full time and paying for it. am i right?
Additional Details
my insurance is better than his. i have been told by many people at the insurance companies that mine is primary because the person who is working full time is always primary. but this one person at empire is telling me different.

My husband is NYPD, too. Will retire in 2 years. I would contact somebody at 1 Police Plaza in the city.

I'm not sure if your insurance is primary. I think you're in the wrong place to get the answer you need... Most people here are very young, in high school etc...

Or call the precinct. Get to speak to the Captain.

And if they can't help you, call Ray Kelly, lol!

Seriously, I would ask a professional advisor. We have plenty of them in the city, but the first logical step would be your husbands former employer...or yours!

The key is HIM. Your husband's insurance is primary and your's would be excess or seconday insurance for him.
As far as the rest of the family and yourself I believe that is still true. His insurance is primary and yours is seconday. Believe me you will find out when you file a claim and each insurance company will have specific conditions which make them primary or secondary insurance coverage.

You can bring a copy of your husband's insurance policy to your school health insurance representative to get the definitive word. Believe me they will gladly show you if they are secondary as opposed to the primary health insurance.

Yes, I believe you are correct. Unfortunately; the standard seems to be around the person who is holding a job. If your husband has better insurance, you may need to weigh the balance of what you earn on your job,and what you pay out on insurance, and what other job oprtions you may have.

No your husband has the primary insurance because he is retired and it is permanent, you may be full time now but if you lose your job out goes your insurance but your husbands insurance is for keeps. yours should fill in where his co-pay does not.

miltonday
check his insurance provider bet its 2nd Yours is primary recheck its important when you fill out claims. That way no co-pay one or the other or both will cover

As a retiree, if he carries his health insurance policy through the NYPD, that policy will be primary for him. He can't have his policy be secondary.
