Obviously most of these answerers have never owned a company with payroll. The "government" does not "pay" unemployment. First, it is ALL taxpayers that pay into unemployment, just like all government programs.

Here is reality. Unemployment is actually a self-funded insurance policy. Employers PAY the tax, usually quarterly. The percent tax they pay varies by state and "experience" level (which basically means if others collected unemployment previously). It is capped annually per employee, in Michigan I pay 8.6% tax on the first $9000 each of my employees earns. I could hire another employee with what I pay in unemployment tax.

As for your question, the status of the business has no effect on your ability to draw unemployment. If you worked enough over the past 15 months to qualify, you will be able to draw it whether or not the company remains in business.

From experience, what you need to start worrying about is health insurance. If the company closes down, there is no COBRA coverage available and you would need to find an individual policy (which is usually cheaper than COBRA anyway).

I would say the writing is on the wall. Dust off and revise your resume and start looking for work. As our economy gets worse and worse, it is not going to get any easier to find a job.

Sorry to hear about your present employer, as a small business owner I can tell you it is incredibly tough out there and many of us are going to find ourselves in the same boat.

Good luck to you

Everybody goes to the same unemployment office to file for unemployment don't they

Yes unemployment is the governments insurance policy that the employer has to pay into
As long as there is a government you will get unemployment checks

forever3princesses
Yes, you are entitled to unemployment. Please refer to the link below. All you will require is "Record Of Employment" from your company.

Yes. Benefits are paid by the state, not the employer.

your company doesn't pay for unemployment, the government does. so yes, you would be eligible. furthermore, the only time you don't really get unemployment if you were fired and the company opposes it.
