Christy | If vacation time is given after a year, is it after a year of your hired date or after your 90 days probation? |
after 90 days we get paid 5 vacation days. i was told after a year your vacation starts over. i put in my request to take vacation 2 weeks ago, it got approved, but now they are saying that i dont have paid vacation yet. That they go by a year after your 90 days probation period is up. In the hand book it says after you work a continual year is when your vacation starts. I just feel like i am being takened advantage of. If i am who can i report it to? |

It's individual to the employer as to when the "year" starts.You can, however, show your supervisior the handbook where it says the continual year worked and see what they say, but they don't have to change their minds. |

It sounds like miscommunication. What you need to clarify is:
1. When does an employee start accruing (earning) vacation time? From employment date or from 90 days after employment date?
2. How soon after employment start can an employee use accrued vacation time?
Most employers have an employee policy book of some kind that details this. |

Make sure and go over your employee handbook carefully before you complain to anybody. Normally you do not get vacations until after you complete a full year from your start date. What you probably understood as 5 vacation days is probably Sick Leave, that is exactly how it was for me here at my new job. Best of luck! |

Date of hire. The 90 day probation is for permanent employment and benefits (usually). |

Well think of it this way, you didn't get your first five days of vacation until you had worked there 90 days. It would only be 9 months later if you go by your actual start date, not a full year. You can complain but they're right and you're wrong. Sorry, but thats the way the cookie crumbles. |
