talula | If you ask an insurance company to look at a particular problem in your house is that considered to be a claim? |
Question on insurance form - Have you ever made an insurance claim |
|

it is only considered a claim if any payments have been issued and if the company have agreed to cover it.
for example, if you wanted to claim for storm damage to a roof but when the assessors came out they declined the claim due to wear and tear, this would be a claim that you put in, but the insurance company declined it.
if a claim is declined or withdrawn before any payments are issued, then it is not considered a claim
hope this helps xx |

The questions on the forms will usually ask previous claims or incidents. If no payments were made but there was cause for an expert to visit they would class as an incident and should be disclosed. If no payments were made will make no difference to premium. Only issue you may have is if they came to assess cracking in the walls which could suggest subsidence and if an insurer is made aware of that chances are they will no quote. |

Yes. You have to open a claim before they will send someone out. And whether they pay out or not it will still be a claim on your record.
However, some very cool, customer service oriented agents - (not adjusters!) will come out to your house and tell you if it is a claim to help you decide whether or not to submit one. I've done it. Not that I'm cool...
Hope that helps!
Edited to add: A later poster is correct that the reported claim that was not paid out would not affect your premium, however if you had additional claims it would be considered a claim for claims frequency, which is something you can get canceled for... |

If you ask an insurance company to look at a particular problem in your house, then yes that would be considered to be a claim. Whether the claim was successful or not is neither here nor there. |

For the insurance company to send out an adjustor who will look at your problem, you have to first file a claim with the claims department.
The adjustor will then look at your damage or loss, and determine if your policy covers it. However, the claim will not affect your record unless the company actually pays out. The claim will show on your record for 5 years, but your policy will not increase in premium if there is no payout.
Depending on insurance companies, the rate increase after a payout can be anywhere between 10-30% of the policy premium. |

I'm with Wendy on this one.
If you are dealing with an independent broker or agent, and not directly with an Insurance Company (i.e. Progressive), they will likely be willing to come out and take a look at the problem and offer advice before reporting a claim. Our office is fairly large, so rather than visiting the clients ourselves (depending on the situtation) we have agreements with various disaster recovery/general contractors to asses the damage prior to reporting a claim.
One situation that I can think of off hand is with a gentleman that had a flood in his basement. He had a $2,500 deductible, so rather than reporting the claim and having him pay the deductible in addition to losing a claims free discount, our contractor was able to clean up the water and damage for around $1,700.
Depending on the circumstances, you may want to review your deductible and call a cleaning or disaster recovery yourself to get their opinion. Most provide free estimates. |

No a claim is when you are asking them to pay for something to be repaired or replaced. |
