If you decide to change insurance companies do you have to do it when your contact ends?
I have a 12 month preiumum with Liberty mutual. I'm in the middle of the preium and pay a montly payment. Do I have to wait for this to expire or can I do it whenever?

You can switch whenever.

Your new policy will send you a form, and you will give that to your previous insurance company, and they will refund you the amount of your unused policy.

You may cancel insurance at any time, and apply for insurance at any time. However, some policies have "no refunds" clauses, or penalty clauses, so whether it pays to switch in the middle of a period depends on the exact terms in your policy. If there is no penalty for stopping the policy you have, and the other policy is more economical for you, switch at the end of a month to make the monthly payment thing simpler. Just stop the Liberty Mutual payments and start the others.

You can change company's any time you choose, You will get money back from the old company that wasn't used pro rated, I never heard of a penalty. Be ware of point grabbers here that say anything.

No, but it is easier. If you cancel mid term, your looking at possible penalties to prevent people from cancelling during a busy season, also, it takes time to cancel the polciy, and get the refund back to you. Meanwhile, you pay for the new policy, and in some cases, are waiting a while to get the return premium.
However, if you don't renew your current policy and have a new one written, you already have the money for the new polciy, and you're not waiting forever for a refund.

As an insurance agent I have many people who listen to the advice of people who are not insurance agents. The fact is that most of the people that they are listening to really don't understand insurance completely.

When you took out insurance with your current company you signed a contract and are bound to the terms of the contract including the cancellation of the policy.

Your policy has a section that will explain how to cancel the policy and if there is a penalty. If you can't find your policy then the best answer will come from Liberty Mutual. Call your agent or company and ask them.

It really depends on the type of insurance and the conditions under which a mid-term cancellation is handled in the policy provisions.

While MOST personal lines policies will allow a pro-rated cancellation (no penalty or short rate fee's) NOT all will.

In the world of commercial insurance, the one policy that WILL charge a short-term penalty in workers compensation insurance.

cybersharque
You can cancel at any time, but there will be a penalty assessed if you cancel during the term instead of nonrenewing.

Romelucky
No absolutely not.

You can cancel at anytime just as long as your new policy takes effect the same day you cancel your old one.

Simply mail Liberty Mutual a form advising your wish to cancel and for them to forward you any reimbursement on the current premium already paid. Also be sure to keep a copy of this notification.

I switched about two months ago and saved a ton of money. Insurance companies are the biggest rip-offs in the world. They will never tell you that you qualify for a lower premium unless you specifically ask them.

Switch to GEICO, they will save you $$$$.

No, you don't HAVE to, but if you cancel mid term, you're subject to a short rate cancellation penalty, AND a cancellation fee in states that allow it. So it will cost you money to cancel mid term.
