If you died in surgery at the hospital would your family still owe for medical bills?
Weird question I know, but I'm curious about the answer

It depends on who signed for financial responsibility. A parent would be responsible for minor children. A spouse MIGHT be responsible for a spouse. If you were unmarried, the estate of the deceased person would be responsible. In that case, the children (adult) would not be responsible for a parent.

They rendered the service. They expect to be paid.

My mother in law died in a major university hospital heart unit,, and we were still getting bills 2 years after she died.

If your insurance company doesn't pay for it, then yes. Unfortunately..

Yes. The expenses were still incurred at the hospital - OR, anesthesiologist, surgeon, etc.

Chris W

I agree with Kenzie, TedEx, LoriS, and Randyort. It is very sad and those grieving are certainly shocked by something that seems so unkind and uncaring, but it is true. If unpaid by the personal who signed for financial responsibility, it also goes on their credit report. Wish this could be changed.

Dave K
I would guess no. I would imagine it would depend on the doctor though.
