If you get laid off or fired they have to offer you the COBRA coverage. Basically you pay the full amount for the insurance, not just the portion you've been paying. It's usually very expensive.
If you get laid off, ask for them to cover you for a few months. The worst they can do is say 'No'. Always ask for everything during the layoff interview. Ask for help with finding a new job, ask for health coverage, ask what kind of reference they'll give you, etc. They may keep saying 'No', but it never hurts to ask.

Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I'm from New Hampshire I'm not sure about California regulations, so I suggest you call a local health insurance agent. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Health-Insurance.html They should be able to assist you. |

Assuming that your company is covered under COBRA, you should be able to continue coverage for 18 months. You'll have to pay the full premium, however. |

It depends entirely on how your employer set the coverage up at the beginning of the year.
Usually, it's EITHER, until the day after you lost your job, OR, the last day of the month in which you worked. NO ONE here would know which way it went.

The company can legally end your coverage as soon as your fired. I think it usually takes until the end of the month to make any changes though. Some companies offer severance packages to employees that are laid off, and sometimes this may include continuation of medical insurance, but this is at their discretion and they don't have to do it at all.
If you loose your job, you can get coverage through a government program called COBRA, but its very expensive so you better have some money in the bank. |
