If you lose a lot of weight and you have loose skin, does insurance cover the surgery to fix it? ?
I am not interested in weight loss tips. This is for a family member.

This is something that might have the potential to be covered, but it would always have to have prior approval from the health insurance company.

It would not be covered if the person wanted loose skin removed only because of the appearance of it. (That would be considered cosmetic.)

However, there are criteria where it could be considered medically necessary. For example, if the skin was becoming infected from skin folds rubbing together, etc.

Your family member and/or their physician should contact the insurance company to find out what their criteria is to consider skin removal "medically necessary." (Every insurer should have their definition available for members/doctors to look at - many large insurers even place their criteria online.)

~~It is usually considered cosmetic surgery and is not covered. There would have to be a medical necessity before an insurance company would even consider it, and then it would still probably be a major hurdle to get.~~

Since all insurance plans are different, you should check with that family member's insurance plan.
