DC | Im confused. Im signing up for supplemental life insurance through my employer and the provider is metlife. ? |
They are offering that as well as voluntary AD&D. The AD&D says it pays benefits in the event of death due to accident or disabling injury. So are they saying that if my death is a result of an accident life insurance wont cover it and only AD&D would??? Like a car accident or motorcycle accident? |

No. You are being offered two separate options. The supplemental life insurance will pay for any type of death and is probably much more expensive than the supplemental AD&D. They are offering the AD&D in case you can't afford or can't qualify for the regular life insurance. If you bought both and had an accidental death that qualified for the AD&D policy then both policies would pay out.
While there are some conveniences to getting these types of policies through work a lot of times the policies aren't portable if you leave the company and they are usually more expensive than if you go out on the open market and get your own policy.
That said if your health is questionable and they don't require any underwriting then it is probably a great bargain. |

if you have to pay for any of that insurance then i wouldn't get it. accidental death and dismemberment only means that they will pay if its an accident related death. that means that if you have a heart attack then they pay nothing. also they will only pay if you loose a leg, arm or other part of your body due to an accident. how many people loose a limb after an accident? not many. |

AD&D only pays if your disabled or die due to an accident.
It is fine to get that coverage. But you also need a life insurance policy that covers any kind of death. |

you're regular insurance will cover a death of any kind (aside from a couple exclusions like suicide within the first 2 years, etc).
An AD&D policy will be additional coverage that will only payout if the death is accidental. This would pay out over and above the amount of your regular life insurance.
Example: If you have $50,000 of regular life insurance and $50,000 of AD&D here's what would happen:
Death by heart attack, illness, medical condition, etc? Claim would pay $50,000 (just the regular insurance, the AD&D would not take affect because this wasn't an accident)
Death by car accident or from falling off a roof at work or something? Claim would be $100,000 (regular ins. plus AD&D would pay).
The rational behind this is that if someone has an illness or something the family is typically more well prepared to deal with the loss, where as if it is accidental, it is unlikely that the family will be prepared to deal with things, so the extra money can be used for things like cousiling, or whatever.
Typically AD&D policies pay out in less than 2% of all cases, so in my opinion these policies are a waste of money and the money is better spent increasing regular insurance polices or put into savings/investments. |

Your regular life pays no matter what, AD & D pays only due to an accident. In my opinion AD&D is a waste of money. If you need life insurance or disability insurance you want it to be paid no matter what happens, not only if it's an accident. You misunderstood what was said.
Sometimes the employers supplemental life is more expensive than the same insurance purchased on your own. The employers group includes older people and people who may not be in good health. That increases the premiums. You need to get quotes to find out what it would cost to buy that insurance on your own before signing up. Also, if you leave your job you usually lose the employers insurance. If you should develop a medical problem you may not be able to get replacement insurance or may have to pay a lot for it. If you get insurance on your own you can buy guaranteed renewable which will remain in force with a known premium as long as you pay the premiums. |

Nope, if you die via an accident, then BOTH policies pay out. |
