I just turned 18 and my parent's insurance company is making a great effort to add my name onto their plan (and almost double the premium). I know in New York, you MUST have insurance to drive, but does that mean that the car must be insured? Or does my name have to be under an insurance plan? I'm really not sure how this whole insurance business goes :( |

The vehicle has to be insured, to keep the plates valid.
And if your parents have a policy, they must list all licensed, household members as drivers, on their policy. If your parents to NOT list a licensed household member, on their policy, then the insurance company can DENY any claims for any accident you might have, while driving their car.
That's FRAUD. Failure to list a licensed household member. And it can be way, way expensive. Your parents will have to list you, or their carrier will cancel them, and they can try fraud with a different insurance company. |

If you own your car free and clear and only want to insure for damage to the other parties car,bodily injury for you and them I believe it is legal.If your car has a lien on it,it will also have to be insured. |

The vehicle has to be insured. Also with most companies, if you are the primary driver of the car, you must be listed as the primary. If you are a secondary driver, you will be listed as such. If, however, you loan the car to your friend one time and they wreck it, it generally will cover this even though they aren't covered. If you drive it as the primary, though you must be listed, because say you get a ticket, then you get in a wreck - the agent will see that you were driving both times and the adjusters may not cover the wreck. |
