The insurer will often recommend a few contractors that have good reputations, and that give the insurer a better rate. These companies often give excellent service because they want the business the insurance company refers. At least that's the hope.
That said, you can use any contractor you wish to use. But if you have a mortgage and if the repairs are over a certain dollar amount the mortgage company may insist on a licensed contractor to do the work. The check will also be made payable to you and the mortgage company so they can ensure you actually repair the damages. |

The insurance company will want you to use licensed, bonded and insured contractors. This is to ensure the repairs are up to code. If your family and friends are licensed, bonded and insured, then there probably won't be a problem. |

Apparently, the policy holder can use any contractor or family member he wants. The insurance company is only obligated by the restrictions within its policy. |

I can give you advice but cannot say 100%!
i live in Murillo, Ontario, Canada and we had experienced a house fire in April of this year! Now our home is with Allstate insurance. At first they had picked a company that they "prefered," but did not do a good job at all and that is when we consulted a lawyer and he had said that we did have the choice of contractor and or personal builder/ reconstructor! After that we switched over to another contractor only because i personaly do know anyone who rebuilds! But to my knowledge it might be a little different in the United States compared to Canada! I am sure however that you are the one who has paid premiums all this time and therefore are entitled to the choice of a contractor, as long as your insurance agrees to pay this private person!
However good luck and hope all gets sorted out.... i hope this was somewhat helpful! |

Yes, you can use anyone you want, but if they mess up, the insurance company won't pay to have it done right a second time, and they WILL require you to have the repairs done correctly, or they'll cancel you.
Here in TX right now, if the repairs are more than $10,000, you need a license to do them. Also, it's a LONG LONG LONG wait for an available contractor. They're pretty busy right now, even the lousy ones. |
