In general, how much does car insurance go up if you add a 17 year old male to your policy?
I'm 17, I Just got my lisence. I'll be driving a 1994 nissan pathfinder, roughly, how much should the car insurance go up for my dad to get full coverage on the pathfinder

It will probably be expensive. Get quotes online to get a general idea. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.

Go to: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=616165&Type=auto

Take care,

As I recall, about 10 years ago, when I added my newly licensed 17 year old son to my policy, it cost an additional $200 every six months but it's been 10 years so I am not positive of that. However, we were not adding a car. He was a driver on my car.

If you are adding a vehicle to the policy and a teenage driver who is going to be the primary driver of that vehicle, I'm guessing that it's going to be a lot more. There are many things though that are taken into account. Where you live is a factor. A car in Los Angeles is going to be way more expensive to insure than a car in a rural town.

You'll need to talk to your Dad's insurance agent to find out for sure.

Why would you want full coverage on a 1994 car?
If you are in an accident, even a minor one, the insurance company will likely consider it totalled and you will barely get anything for it after the deductible.
Most insurance companies offer two discounts for young drivers that you should look into - Driver Traing Discount and Good Student Discount.

the value of the car isn't going to have much of an impact at all.... it's an older car. The "ouch" is going to be the liability. But those of us with kids have all felt it..

And, darlin' this is where we start looking forward to you getting older.... lol The older you get , the cheaper you get, at least from an auto insurance standpoint.

The increase will depend on where you live, the driving records of EVERYONE in the household.

The best you can do is, be a safe driver, hit your curfew times (statics show that the majority of accidents happen with youthful drivers after 11pm.) So when your folks say when to be home, hush up and do it!

Do not use your car as a taxi service for your friends. At your age, driving is a privilege, don't give your parents a reason to pull that privilege. All you have to do is look at the number of kids your age getting off the school bus.

Keep a B avg. at school.. that really adds up.. and YES the company will want a copy of the report card.. you can't just sit there and say.. uh huh.... lol.

In 2003 there was a study done in California regarding accidents involving youthful drivers......
#1 cause females under the age of 18 ------ makeup!!! OMG
#1 cause males under the age of 18 ------ food !!!!!

so... no eating while you're driving!!!.. and if you see a girl trying to put make-up on while she's driving get away from her fast... she's gonna hit you!!!!!

Hang in there.. You sound like a good kid to even be concerned about the costs

Varies per city and state so it's hard to say for sure

There's no "in general"! In Iowa, for a two adult, one kid, one car family with minimum liaiblity, maybe $500 a year.

In NJ, for a two adult, one kid, three new cars, tons of liability, full coverage, maybe $8,000 a year.

YOu'll need to call your dad's agent to get the exact quote, for your region.

But "full coverage", meaning collision and comprehensive, on that pathfinder, is going to cost THOUSANDS, likely more than the book value of the car. You're much better off going without, and just replacing the car.

There is not enough information to give you any sort of accurate answer. Where do you live? Do you have any driver education and a certificate to prove this? How many vehicles are already on your dad's policy? How many drivers are on your dad's policy? What are their driving records like (accidents/tickets)? Are you getting a loan to purchase the vehicle that requires you to get collision and comprehensive (if not you may want to forget about collision)? Without any of this info any answer you get here is, at best, a wild shot in the dark. Speak with your dad's broker/agent, who has a much better idea of you and your father's situation.

A lot. A whole lot. And really, the other poster who mentioned th e age of your car is incorrect in the sense that the age of your car has NOTHING to do with limits of liability, etc. Where she gets the idea that if you are driving an older car you won't be doing it recklessly, I don't know, but it matters not. If the car is paid for (it must be at this point) then of course you don't need collision or comprehensive insurance, but liability (the law) will skyrocket through the roof at your age!

X-tine
it will go up A LOT, seeing as how you're young. however, because your car isn't new, it won't be as much. if you have an older car in the household, put your name as the primary owner for that car because the older the car, the less likely you are to be driving recklessly.

edit:for the poster below me. compare the rates for the pathfinder her has now with a 2007 bmw. do you think they will be the same for a 17 year old boy?

Anywhere from $50.00 to $125.00 dollars per month.
