In health insurance how long typically does a pre-existing condition once cured have an effect on changing ins
I want to switch plans but am afraid if my prior illness returns the new insurance will consider it a pre existing condition and not cover me

Depends on the illness. Typically for something like cancer, they'll want to know if you've been treated for it in the past 7 years (in which case, they'll decline to take you if they can). For something like an injury (knee injury or such) it's usually 2 years. If you're looking at an EMPLOYER sponsored plan, it's usually between 1 year and 2 years.

It depends on your state.... the previous posters have it right if your state allows insurances to not insure you for pre existing conditions. In Texas they do not allow ins. companies to not insure anyone for any pre existing illnesses.

from what I understand, so long as you don't have a gap in coverage of more than 63 days then you are fine, also, if it goes from group insurance to another group insurance they can't exclude it, but if you go from group to individual then you migh have that chance. I think so long as you scedule the new plan to start the day the old one expires you should be safe, but speak with your agents about this, they can DEFIENETLY help you out!

Libs Are Funny
In NY & NJ you cannot have a gap of more than 63 days in coverage. If you do they will not cover you for things related to that condition for 1 year.

Some states are different though.

Frank
As long as your current plan is considered "Creditable Coverage" and you have had no gaps exceeding 63 days, you should be alright....Check with a local independent agent in your state. The problem is each state has their own set of rules and regulations....In some states Short-term individual plans are not considered creditable.

AZBlue
For an individual/family plan in Arizona, (not a group plan,) and depending on the severity of the pre-existing condition, the condition could be excluded from coverage if treated within the last ten years. Many pre-existing conditions have a one year waiting period, or less, if currently being treated for the condition.
More information is needed, primarily what state you reside in, and whether you are interested in a group plan or individual. The rules are very different between these two types of plans.

If you had prior coverage with less than a 63 day lapse then your insurance company cannot pre-x your condition. However if were not previously insured than you may be subject to pre-existing. I would recommend first checking with the insurance company to see if they have a pre-x clause on the plan. If so, you will want to find the time span that you have to be treatment free. I work in the health insurance field and the standard is you would have to go 6 months treatment free for it to be covered.
