Insurance Advice??
Husband is going to allergist Monday. This is his first time going.
His insurance says 20$ copay per visit to a physicians office- but is an allergist considered a specialist or physician???

Can we expect to just pay the 20.00 per visit and then pay for any prescriptions he may get? Do you think we will have to pay any more than the 20.00 upfront and be billed?

I am not looking for the answer "depends on what kind of healthcare he has" he has united healthcare and I am asking you all on your PAST EXPERIENCES?
Generally Speaking......
Additional Details
I am saying, are we going to get billed the rest after we pay the copay up front or will we have to pay it all at the office that day?

The easiest thing to do is call your insurance provider.

Generally speaking ...with United Healthcare:

Yes. You will have to pay more than the $20 copay.

An Allergist counts as a specialist, and most plans under UHC have a separate and additional charge for allergy testing, how much I can't say, because it varies from plan to plan. But more cost is almost always there.

//----

You'll pay the Specialist Copay at the time you have the visit to the Allergist. The rest will come later.

Depends on your policy. First and foremost, is it an HMO or PPO plan? If its an HMO, you need to go through the primary care provider first.

An allergist is considered a specialist and would be charged the copay that applies to seeing a specialist. I have seen my family doctor, paid the copay, who sent me that day to a specialist, who charged me another copay. He will also have to pay for the prescriptions. Ask the allergist if they have any samples of the medication they are prescribing. This way he can see if there are any side effects before getting it filled at the pharmacy.

An allergist is a specialist. They will tell you at the office what the copay is - most likely, the specialist copay.

An allergist is considered a specialty office visit, and most md offices expect that money up front. You can call the doctor's office before you make a visit if you don't have the money, and they may arrange to bill you. You also will have to pay for any prescriptions unless they give you samples at the office. You can ask for a script for generic meds and that will be cheaper then brand names. (Generic works exactly the same)...
