I wondered if you can help me.
We had a fire at our house last weekend, and our home wasnt insured (yes yes i know, please no lectures).
Anyway, our leather furniture was covered under a different policy which we took out when we purchased the furniture. The Fire Brigade had to smash our front room window to gain access to our home, covering the sofa with soot, and the shards of glass our just ingrained into our leather.
The insurance company are saying that because it wasn't me or my husband that damaged it, we are not able to claim. Is there any clever way around this?

Cat - After checking, it does say damage or staining caused by contractors (but I'm sure that wouldnt cover the fire brigade) however it does say that fire is not covered - although I'm not claiming for fire damage |

Go straight to your local citizens advice and bring your insurance dockets with you, they will be able to tell you if your covered or not |

You'll have to go over the insurance contract. The details are in there. Does it REALLY say it the policy that damage isn't covered unless it was you or your husband? Clumsy relatives don't count? (In which case - that policy was a scammy peice of trash) |

Well try and clean it up. If then by doing this you damage the furniture further, then it is you that has damaged it. |

check your policy over and over until you can find it if not then your screwed really. |

Unfortunately, you have lost the opportunity to lie to your insurers.
Take out a new insurance policy, buy the same sofa and keep the old one in the garage.
In a few months claim that an accident led to the sofa being damaged by glass. You will need to claim for a new window too. Switch the sofas before an inspector/adjuster comes around. If you get the money - fine. If you get a replacement sofa sell it as new (don't unpack it) on Ebay.
(By the way this constitutes an insurance fraud and is illegal and may lead to criminal proceedings if you are caught.) |
