You are finding out that a single 18 year old male pays a premium for auto insurance. You might try to work with your father and stay on his policy until you are 21 or married, that would cut your premiums some.

If your in California your rates improves after you have had your drivers license for 3 years. Call your parents insurance agent and ask how to get the following discounts: multi-car, multi-line (take renters insurance out to get that), good student, good driver, loyalty discount, and ask if they offer any other discounts.
You can reduce your rate if you take renters insurance which is very cheap. Or stay at home a little while longer.
