LJ1010 | Insurance and prescription benefits for a student?? |
I am a full time college student, living on my own, with asthma, migraines and ADD. I don't have any benefits, and I was wondering if anyone knows how a full time student can get good prescription and health benefits without paying $400 dollars a month. Out of pocket my prescriptions would cost around $600 a month. I was under my fathers coverage and my benefits run out in December. My fathers can't afford to pay for my coverage and prescriptions. I can't get a job due to certain circumstances. Additional Details I'm 25 years old |

If you're on prescriptions that cost about $600 a month already, you'll have a difficult time finding a health insurance plan with a low premium...the underwriting process will not be kind to you. If you manage to get approved for a policy, you'll get hit on the premiums.
Your best bet would be to go through your university to see if they have a student plan - often students don't have to go through underwriting for those.
Otherwise, you'll have to consider getting a job with benefits (and finishing school part time), going without insurance entirely, or paying out the nose for premium for COBRA or a private policy. Or see if you can qualify for Medicaid. |

Have you contacted your university / college? Health benefits - at least through the university clinic - may be covered in your tuition (at least it was when I went to school).
You need to go back to live with your dad, instead of on your own, so you can save rent money...then perhaps you can pay for the cost of your coverage under your father's policy...it seems like it would be difficult to get an individual policy. |

Check with your school. Many times there is a low-cost group insurance plan available for students. |

You CAN qulify for a short term plan, but it will not cover the ADD. it will, however, get you a substantial discount on your prescriptions. You should check out http://www.ShortTermHealthPlan.com I checked, and they do not decline for ADD.
Another option would be a prescription discount card, like the RxCoPay plan. You can get info about that at www.hpa-inc.com they have a list of prescriptions you can look through and it will tell you how much they will cost so you can determine if that plan would be a good deal for you. |

I understand the migrain thing. I suffer from those as well. I dont have insurance either, but that is because I am self employed and just can't afford a private plan right now. What has saved me is this prescription discount card. It helps a little on the brand names, but any of the generic medications I take i see like at 50-60% discount. sometimes more, but not too often. I called the company and you dont have to register anything, just print and show..that is it. So i scanned the card and here is a link to it. good luck

Hello there! As another poster said, your ADD will be excluded by most health insurance companies. You should look into alternatives, such as the company I represent. Since you are a student with (I assume) a low income, we could help you get your prescriptions for less than $100.00 a month. Check out the info in my profile under 'health care'.
Good luck! |

Nope. That ADD is going to pretty much be excluded anywhere you go.
Your best bet is to see if you can get on the plan through your school. |
