Insurance cancelled without notifying insuree?
My father took care of my health insurance throughout my entire childhood, up til I was 20 when he canceled my health insurance, without telling anyone. I did not find out for 10 months. Is that illegal on his part or should the insurance company have contacted me to let me know?

It's his policy, not yours. HE gets to pick who's on it.

You're not the policyholder. The insurance company has no duty to notify you. Only the policyholder is entitled to notification.

It is your father's obligation to take care of you till the age of minority. Now you have attained age of majority. He may be indirectly suggesting you to take care of yourself i.e., your health & insurance etc., without telling you of this. He is right, as you might learnn.
On the part of Insurnce company, as long as the premiums are paid your insurance is in force and you are protected. As soon as the period for which the premium paid expires, the protection ceases to exist. Hence you have to pay the next premium instalment by the due date to avail the protection. Insurance Co. normally informs you the due date. Still it is your lookout to pay.

No, it's not illegal what he did, or the insurance company not contacting you. Times are hard, money short, he had to cut back. It's his money after all, in a way you were getting a free ride, though I knew he did this because he was concerned about your welfare. Insurance companies only have to deal with the person paying the policy as far as notifications.

Your father is the policyholder - the health insurance company removed you at his request. The insurance company does not have a contract with you - they have it with your father. The insurance company has no legal obligation to tell you that your father removed you from the policy.

Sounds to me like the problem is a breakdown in communication between your father and you. Don't get to blame this one on the insurance company.

He was the policy holder. Cold but they are not obliged to tell you when he cancels.

It's awful to say, but your father was the policy holder and the only one that the insurance company was obligated to contact about any changes to the policy.
It's awful to think that a parent would do something like that for no apparent reason? Do you speak with your father or have contact with him? If there was some sort of fall out between you two, then it could make some sense as to why.

Hopefully you didn't find out as a result to a major medical issue of which you are now liable for?

Wishing you the best!
