Can your employer/company refuse to insure your significant other because you are not married ?
My nephew started a new job and put his girlfriend on his insurance. The company just found out they were not married and told him he could not put her on his insurance and canceled her.
They are living together and have an 8 month old baby. Additional Details We live in Texas,if that helps any |

Yes they can. Some employers will insure significant others, while others will not. Your nephew should, however, check to see if he can place their 8 month old baby on his policy. I believe that the company must provide coverage for children.
Good luck. |

thats right they have to be married = otherwise he has to get coverage for her separately |

At this time, employers are not required to offer insurance to unwed couples. Some more progressive companies have started to offer coverage for significant others at a substantial cost to the employee.
Your nephew should be able to continue coverage for the baby as long as he is listed as the father on the birth certificate or has adopted the child. Otherwise, the insurance carrier can opt to drop coverage for the baby as well. |

Your nephew can tell to his employer that she is her partner, but it differs from organisation to organisation, some of them insure and some dont. So i dont think he can do much. But if he wants to insure her ask him to marry her |

By not being legally married he has no insurable interest in her. He can insure the child, but not a girl friend. |

Yes they can refuse you. I know in most states they don't allow significant others to be part of the insurance. But a lot of areas are fighting that. When my husband (fiance at the time) had our first son he had insurance where our son was on but I could not be since we were not married. That is what makes a marriage...it is a unity, where 2 become 1. It seperates roommates being on insurance or bums pressuring people to be on their insurance. It raises costs also doing it like that. Tell them they should go down to the courts and get married that way. A wedding is not a marriage, and they can do the marriage part later on when they can afford it. |

Most insurance companies will not let you issure your significant other unless you are married. The child, however is eligible for benifits if the child is your dependant, if the child is yours or not. |

Yes, "shacking up" does not qualify you for benefits. They should get married and stop "playing house". Then he can add the wife & baby on to his health insurance, AND the rest of the world will know he respects the mother of his child. |
