Itsme | Insurance eligibility question? |
My 21 year old son will loose his health insurance the first of the year. (he is covered under my employers plan). I can only list him under my family plan if he is a full time student. He dropped out of college due to a drug addiction and is curre tly in a treatment facility. How would I appeal his coverage denial or get new insurance for him. His medical bills were over $20,000 last year not including his rehab which is private pay. Thanks in advance. |

You can't appeal his eligibility. The rules are black and white - either he is a full time student or he's not. There is nothing to appeal in that regard.
As others have mentioned, you won't be able to purchase an insurance plan for him either. No insurance company will enroll someone who is currently in a facility. (Not to mention that his recent past would likely exclude him from coverage anyhow.)
You have very limited options.
COBRA continuation coverage through your employer is by far your best bet, if its available to you. (Even though its expensive, its a necessary expense in your son's case.)
You could see whether your state has any high-risk policies, which are required to accept everyone who applies and pays the premium. (These are even more expensive than COBRA - can run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 or more a month. Not a realistic option for most people.)
Or else you can try to get your son enrolled in your state's Medicaid program. If you can't do COBRA or purchase a high-risk policy, then Medicaid is the only real option that he has. *If* he meets the Medicaid eligibility criteria for your state.
Wish I had another suggestion for you, but there aren't many options for a person in your son's situation. If by some chance your state has any special programs, the staff at your son's treatment center should be able to direct you where to go for more information. |

Do COBRA if you can. Your chances of appeal are very, very slim. I was on my father's Regence plan, I had major back problems at 20 which meant I wasn't studying for awhile and they dropped me. I talked to them about it but they didn't care, once I was enrolled at least part time again I could get back on, but that was it. |

You really only have two options...Medicaid (if you qualify) or Cobra. He qualifies for 36 months of Cobra. Contact your HR department for the rates.
Good luck! |

Definitely try for cobra coverage, it will be very expensive but it will protect his insurability. Then as fast as possible find a new insurer.
If the plan states he must be a full time student, and he's not then there's not much you can do. Also you are probably going to run into difficulty purchasing a plan for him since he is of legal age.
Your state has an insurance board that would better be able to reccomend some options for him while he is recovering. |

i agree with the last guy u wont be able to get him insured especially since his med bills were 20,000 last year however the best thing to do if u can put him on the family plan is to get him back to school it will be hard but he will still be receiving medicine and if the facility costs as much as the medicine then thats the best thing to do also moving to europe is a good option due to the fact that in some countries treatment is free I'm not sure if for drugs but it might be wise to find out.If u do get him insured the insurance policy will take more money. one very important thing u frogot to state is what insurance coverage plan u have or want to have. |

Unfortunately, you will probably not be able to obtain new insurance due to his addiction problem. If you are able to continue his coverage under COBRA, I highly recommend that option. |
