Regarding health insurance policies, in California if you purchase a PPO plan and if you have not prior coverage in the past 60 days you will be subject to a pre-existing condition clause for six months, meaning that nothing that is pre-existing will be covered- this is a fact for group or Individual coverage (meaning that regardless if you receive the policy from your employer or if you go out and buy it yourself). Hopefully you have obtained insurance from an employer and the policy is a HMO- then you will not have any problems!.. If you bought it as an Individual directly from the company recently and were pregnant prior to getting coverage, you are really in bad shape. The company will consider this fraud and revoke the policy -null and void- check with the agent who sold it to you for advice. I would recommend you contact AIM in California http://www.aim.ca.gov/english/AIMhome.asp
they are wonderful and cover maternity.

I wouldn't count on it. I'm still paying on my 4-year-old. I had already applied for insurance in March but was waiting for it to go into effect. I got pregnant in April and my insurance kicked in, in May. I went to the doctor in June. When I had my daughter in December, I thought everything was covered but it wasn't. The hospital knocked off a few thousand dollars (complications and I had to have a C-section) but I had to pay the doctor in full for all the visits, the anesthesiologist, the labs, and the hospital. I'm making payments and she will be paid for when she is 5 years old. I'm sorry to say it, but this is how it worked out for me. I was told that since it was "pre-existing" (as I hadn't been diagnosed until after my insurance was in effect) that it would be covered, but that ended up not being the case.

But do not panic. My niece is also paying for her child, as they didn't have healthcare coverage, and the doctors, hospital, etc., will work with you.

If you were already pregnant when you filled out the paperwork & they are aware of it...then yes. If you didnt tell them you were pregnant....no & if you got pregnant after you filled it out...yes as long as maternity is covered, alot of plans it needs be added on which is extra.

Check "PRE-existing" Conditions

If you are talking about health insurance, then yes, all of your doctors visits during pregnancy will be covered. BUT, if you mean disability for maternity leave, then no, they will not cover it unless you signed up for insurance before you got pregnant. My disability insurance states that if you give birth within 10 months of signing up for the insurance, they will not cover it because you were actually pregnant at the time you signed up for it, which is considered a pre-existing condition.

Use your eyes and brain and read the insurance policy coverage. How do we know what is covered and what is not ?

amyvnsn
Yes, you just tell them you didn't know you were pregnant. I think you are covered.

As long as you didnt go to the Doctors for this condition yet, then it will be covered.

If, on the other hand, you already saw some one about it, then it is not covered under your "pre-existing condition" clause..(which really is rotten, but, what can be done...sheesh!).

And, CONGRADULATION on your pregnancy!

I wish you well..

It depends on your insurance policy with your employer. It could be considered a "pre-existing" condition. Generally, if your work has a group policy (generally has more than 5 full-time employees) than in most cases group policies will cover pregnancy. The best thing to do it check with your employer & check out your insurance plan. Make sure to look under pre-exisiting condisiona dn see if there are any exclusions.

You should be fine, but check your new insurance. It may rule out all pre-existing conditions, but I know with my wife, I switched jobs about 3 weeks before she delivered and it was covered 100%. So as long as you do your research, you should be fine. Good luck and congrats on the news!

mbrcatz
If the FIRST time you see the doc is in January, ie, you haven't been diagnosed as pregnant before, then yes.

msjose
It depends on your employer's coverage.. It used to be that pregnancy was considered pre-existing and insurance did not cover. Laws have changed, and if you get insurance with maternity coverage, you will be covered. Pregnancy is excluded from the pre-existing clause.
