Chances are if his grandmother took out the policy she was the owner of the policy, which means she had sole decision of who the beneficiary was. Odds are that unless your husband or you had directly spoken to the grandmother about changing the policy, chances are that you were not the beneficiary and there's really nothing that can be done about it.

Contrary to the previous posts about it likely lapsing, it depends on the type of policy and how long ago the policy was taken out. IF your husband was older and the policy a whole life policy taken out prior to roughly the mid-80s, there is a good chance that the policy could have been paid up or that the dividends on the policy were covering the premiums thus keeping it in force and no one would have to be paying the premiums on it. Back during that time period, people had the option for paid up additions (the dividend are used to buy more benefits) or premium offset (the premiums are used to reduce the premiums and eventually pay them in full if the dividend is high enough).

Aside from contacting the grandmother (if she's still around), or going through old bank records to find a transaction with a life insurance company withdrawal, the only thing you can do is call around to every insurance agency in the phone book and see if they have any records. It might be very difficult to even get an acknowledgement that your husband or the grandmother were even clients let alone what happened to the policy though unless your name was on the file/policy as well. Privacy laws indicate that a company shouldn't even ackowledge that a person is a client without that persons permission first.

if the policy that insured your husband was still inforce (not likely), it would have been paid to the beneficiaries long ago. it is clear that you weren't a beneficiary or that the policy had lapsed (most likely)

It doesn't matter. You can't collect. He wasn't the policy owner. You weren't the beneficiary- no doubt grandma is.

But you'd ask his grandmother. If she's deceased more than a couple years, no doubt, the policy is long, long cancelled. If you don't keep paying those premiums, the policy cancels.

Typically, those policies gave $1000 of coverage. Not much. After grandma pays in $1,000 in premiums, the coverage amount goes up slightly. Maybe, if it was still active today, depending on his age, it would pay out $2000, if grandma has faithfully paid the premium every month (or every year).

You're probably asking, is there a central database where you can look this up. The answer is no - no agency collects this information.

Sorry. You're on your own for this one.

The types of insurance that people get for children need to have the premiums paid--especially after they are converted to adult policies. If your husband wasn't paying any premiums, the insurance would have expired long ago.

All you can do is call some of the big companies and ask them to search your husband's name to see if he had life insurance with them.

But it is like finding a needle in a haystack. But there is no harm in trying if you have the time to do the work.

Good Luck.

Look through your husband's records and maybe even his grandmother's records. There must be some paper policy somewhere. If not, go through their canceled checks looking for insurance company payees. Good luck.
