Questionablequestion...
Insurance tell them or not? Will it help or not?
Ok since you guys answered my other questions all the people at work are asking me this stuff now, here's the latest.. A woman at my work is very overweight, she has tried very hard (I've seen some of this first hand) to lose weight but to no avail. Yesterday she said she *thinks* she might have diabetes but isn't sure. I told her to see a doctor immediately and she said, she was planning on going to her insurance to see if they would help pay the cost of the weight loss surgery she was planning on having (something called a MGB). She said that about 90% of the people who have this surgery no longer suffer from diabetes issues after but she didn't know if going to the doctor and finding out if she has diabetes would help, or hurt her chances with insurance. Common sense tells me that if this procedure reduces her overall "bad health" that in the long run it will save the insurance company money, but then again I have NO idea how those guys work. So what should she do, find out if she has diabetes THEN tell them? And if so will it hurt/remove her chances of insurance heliong with her surgery or ? All help appreciated!

Well, her numbers are off. 85% of the people who have MGB - gastric bypass, five years after surgery, are at or over their pre surgery weight. The mortality rate from the surgery, is

Weight loss surgery is NOT a cure. The only cure is a lifestyle change. Because of that, most health insurance companies will NOT pay for it, even after you've done a year of supervised dieting. It does NOT save insurance companies money in the long run, it actually costs MORE, as there are frequently complications (one of which is death) from operating on obese people, and frequently even MORE medical treatment is required. 2% of patients have serious complications or death, within one month of surgery.

The diabetes isn't going to matter, as far as the health insurance company goes. She'll have to call the number on the back of her card, to see what process she has to go through, if it's even covered.

Well, first of all, she'll went to make sure that her health insurance doesn't have an exclusion for weight loss surgery. If the policy excludes weight loss surgery, then it doesn't matter how medically necessary the procedure might be for her...she doesn't have coverage for it. (Excluded means "excluded no matter what.")

However, if her policy does have the potential for weight loss surgery to be covered, it would actually be helpful if she had a diabetes diagnosis. To get prior approval for weight loss surgery, one of the criteria is generally to have a co-morbidity (a condition that your excessive weight contributes to...ex. diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.)

She needs to ask her insurance company if her policy potentially covers weight loss surgery, and if so, what is the process for prior approval?

And get to the doctor right away to have the diabetes tested...regardless of the surgery, she's going to want to get that under control.

Presurgery lab tests will disclose if she has diabetes in any case. No way a surgeon would operate without a complete medical workup first.

OK, if she is currently insured, and has been for some time, then her conditions may no longer be considered pre-existing. I agree with previous answers--there is no way for her to get the procedure without a complete work up first, anyway. However, some plans do exclude these weight-loss procedures. She needs to go see the HR department and find out exactly what is and is not covered by the plan, and then she needs to have an honest talk with the doctor. Together, they can find an appropriate plan for helping her regain her health.

ya, she would need a check up / blood panel work up FIRST

if it is proven medically necessary for her to have the surgery it would be covered. make sure she gets everything pre-authorize.

GOOD LUCK

the insurance company use the info the Dr. provides not the insured, if there is a medical condition they take the Dr.s word not the patient. Also here is a non sensical thought they will pay thousands of dollars for a pregnancy but not the 500 for a vasectomy

It looks like you feel really screwed up by this problem. Hope you may found helpful here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info/free-online-health-insurance.htm .

Finding out that she has diabetes may adversely affect her. Some insurance company's will not cover any new health issue once one has been noted. She is Better off trying for the surgery, if the insurance will cover it, the weight loss will most likely get rid of the diabetes. And once the surgery is approved, the diabetes can be address before she goes under the knife if she wants.
