Insurance with Pre-existing thyroid --Get 10 points!!!!?
Hi All,

I was diagnosed with hypo-thyroid with a insurance that I left long back, now my doctor was contacted by my new insurance and they told them its existing. My insurance won't pay for my thyroid related issues.
There are two options: (Pls advise):--

Plan A- Start a fresh insurance and go to a new doctor saying nothing about thyroid problem

Plan B- How much loss will I have to face if I tell my insurance that I have hypo-thyroid (I know generally if i tell insurance tht i have a pre-ex they will start paying for it only after 12months) .

I am very tensed on this, I am a international student and they have a requirement to have insurance.

Appreciate all help. Thanks alot.

It is true that any new individual insurance policy you get will have a pre-existing clause. The clauses can vary in length depending on the company & state inwhich you reside. Some can last for the life of the policy.

Starting with a new company and a new doctor won't help your cause. Underwriters will check the MIB (Medical Insurance Bureau) that will also inform them of pre-existing conditions, medications etc. Some companies will give you a declanation for false or missing information.

My advise is to shop the companies in your area and find who has the shortest pre-existing period for someone with your condition.

There's no treatment for hypo-thyroidism outside of medication. Generic Synthroid is not expensive and actual Synthroid can be had free of charge if you qualify for the patients assistance program. You cannot NOT tell them because you need the replacement hormone in order to function properly and be symptom free.

I've been diagnosed since 1969 with an under-active thyroid...I take my meds and I'm good. There's simply no real insurance issue here.

If you are currently insured DO NOT stop your insurance. Usually the pre-existing clause only applies if you were not insured prior to your enrollment date. If you have been continuously insured for more than 12 months, it should not apply to you. Make sure your current company has your past insurance history. A new doctor might require your old doctor's information, and then your insurance company would know anyway. Plus, you don't want to go untreated. You should speak to an insurance agent or ask your doctor who deals with his insurance filing. They probably have someone who's trained to deal with insurance problems. If they don't, try a larger clinic who does.

I'm really surprised by this as I have hypothyroidism and new insurance paid for any claims I had. My husband got laid off 3 years ago and I had hypothyridism. When he got a new job and new insurance I just went to the doctor as usual and the new insurance paid for everything. Hypothyroidism isn't a condition that insurance really cares whether its preexisting or not, as tests aren't that expensive. If you had thyroid cancer resulting in becoming hypo, I could then see the concern of the insurance company.

Are you testing once or twice a year? Because you can test without insurance at Healthcheck. It should cost under $100 using discount code 12345 from about.com thyrid forum for TSH, Free T4, and Free T3. Then you can get generic thyrid medication for $4.00 at Walmart.

dear friend,

please tell the insurance company everything. since this is a pre existing condition & you can't hide it from insurance company.

if you hide and they find out later you may not get compensated either. Tyroid related problems is common. I have customers who still manage to buy medical insurance with tyroid related problems. But the previous medical records must indicate that you are taking good care of your tyroid problems by showing them your regular medication or regular checkup (preferbly by the same doctor) This way you can convice the underwriter better. But chances, you may not allow to make any claim related to tyroid problems for the next 12 months

Please dun hide the fact, let the underwriter decide.

You'll get the insurance, just that particular disorder won't be covered for 12 months.

Plan A will not work. Insurance companies trade information and they will know if you have been to another insurance company and will require you to disclose.

I'm hypothyroid.

The bloodwork, every three months, costs me about $30. My prescriptions cost me $11 a month. That's under my prescription copay.

Plan A isn't going to work, as the companies can and will check medical records bureau and find prior prescriptions for you, for thyroid.

Stick with plan B.

Underwriting practices differ from company to company. As an example, this particular pre-existing condition would be excluded from coverage for 11 months with Blue Cross of Arizona, BUT...the medication would be covered immediately.
See if this is the case with your local Blue Cross.
