the WOG | Insurance won't cover pre-existing conditions, so how does that work with mental illness..? |
For a while now I've been putting off seeing a psychiatrist, mostly due to cost....I was going to sign up for the super expensive insurance we have at work so I could get into one, but how does the pre-existing condition thing work....I mean....when someone goes to a psychiatrist, it's usually because something has been wrong from quite some time....no one just instantly becomes troubled.....with mental health, is the pre-existing condition thing any different? If not...how long should I wait before using the insurance? Additional Details So does pre-existing mean treated before? When I was 16/17 I was treated but I was taken to them by my mother under her insurance....I'm 28 now.....would that affect anything? |

Pre-existing means you sought treatment before the policy went into effect. Since exclusion periods for nonterminal pre-existing conditions usually are 3 years max, you should have no problems (especially since your prior treatment was under your Mom's plan and are now getting in a group policy, which is much less picky than an individual policy).
Also, if you seek treatment under the group policy, you have no worries about your employer discovering your seeking help. All treatment is strictly confidential. It has become even more confidential now that HIPAA (Federal privacy law) went into effect. This has made very stringent guidelines as to whom can access names and SS#s of those being treated - and for what circumstances. This is for the patient's (or parent of patient's) protection. |

~~With group insurance there would be no preexisting conditions. You are fully covered through your employers insurance.
Secondly, until there has been a written diagnoses, there is no condition. So until you have been seen and diagnosed for any condition there is no preexisting. You could still be eligible for private insurance.
Seeing a psychiatrist, does not necessarily mean you have a medical condition. You may just need a therapist to talk through and learn tools to deal with your current situation. This would not necessarily cause a preexisting condition. If you have a condition serious enough to require medication, then this may cause it to be more difficult to qualify for private insurance, but will not cause any problem with group insurance (through your employer).
If you can not afford insurance, you can check with your county health department. Many counties offer low cost care for low income people for mental health care.
There are many options, but at this point from what you've said, you have no preexisting condition. So your options are many.~~ |

Pre means before. So, if you had symptoms of something or the condition PRIOR to getting the insurance then it's pre-existing.
If you get the condition AFTER the insurance is in place then it would be a POST-existing condition.
It's as simple as that. Whether or not it's covered depends on the plan. |

It does not mean that you have needed any medical attention before. It just means you need some help now.
If you need help, get it. Sign up for the more expensive insurance and then get the help you need. If that is not possible then you ask for state's health welfare program like medi-cal.
Bottom line, is get the help you need. |
