HR Girl | Insuring engagement ring and jewelery in general...? |
I currently have my engagement ring and a few watches added on to our home owners insurance policy, however, when changing policies recently (I live in FL) our agent mentioned that a separate policy may be a better option for us. Unfortunately, she just left for vacation and hasn't give me all the details but I'm curious as to why (besides the commission) she would recommend a separate policy. How could this potentially benefit us? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Additional Details Ok, I was just informed about a personal article floater? It sounds like the HO policy will only cover up to $2,500 and that isn't going to replace my ring! |

Yes, I have my ring separtely insured. It is called a "floater package" thru our insurance. I wouldn't trust my homeowners with jewelry. My sister lost her whole wedding ring and engagement ring. They were the aniversarry band with diamonds around it with the engagement ring in the middle, which wasn't tiny..........not covered under homeowners like she thought. We only pay like $15/year(if that) to have that extra floater package, not that much to pay in my book if I lost it, they will give me what it is worth. So I would also recommend getting your jewelry assessed so you know what's it worth.
Good luck to you!!! |

Some companies will let you schedule your jewerly on your policy it's called HO461 you get an appraisal it pays what the appraisal states or replaces the item. the company I'm with does not have a deductible on this and charges $16 per $1000 that you schedule and gives it all risk coverage. |

You don't need a separate policy. Just schedule your jewelry and watches for specific amounts. This is just an attachment to you HO policy called an inland marine floater. Most insurers will want to see appraisals of the items. |

Sometimes a seperate policy is cheaper, when you're talking higher values, than the endorsement on your homeowners policy.
Coverages should be the same.
AND, she's supposed to have someone there covering for her to answer that type of question. |

no point in having 2 separate policies
you just need to add the jewelry to your current policy
maybe you've been told that 2 poilicies would cost you less because insurance companies apply discounts when you have more than one policy with them, but it's intended like car insurance + homeowners insurance etc...not 2 separate policies for the same thing.
have a look at this directory of companies in Florida to compare the quotes http://www.homeinsuranceguides.com/home-insurance-quotes/?Florida/ |

It depends on how much you are looking to insure. If the amount is substantial, than you may be better off with a separate floater. Otherwise, you may want to just schedule them on your homeowner's policy. Either way, you will get the appraised amount for each piece of jewelry. |

Possibly your HO policy doesn't have a good endorsement for jewelry. Possibly your policy is in peril due to claims history or has a high deductible because of hurricane claims; who know but the advise is sound, I'd separate them. In FL save your HO policy for hurricanes/tornadoes/sinkholes/ whatever the peril of the day is.
Do a Google search for a company called Jewelers Mutual. They sell jewelry only policies over the Internet and are reasonable |

Beats me. I would think that increasing the limits on your HO policy would be the way to go. |

Scheduling and having your own inland marine policy are two different options. If you schedule a 10K ring on your homeowners policy and something happens to the ring you could be subject to the deductible and you get hit with a claim against your homeowers policy. No matter what you do you must make sure all risks are covered...all perils, mysterious disapearance. Every company is different. But for someone to say just schedule it...well that just may not be right for you. When in doubt, get it on its own policy. |
