grizzlenb | Is $700 to add spouse to group health plan normal? |
The cost of adding my spouse to my company's small group health plan is upwards of $700 per month. Reading up online, it appears that in CA rates vary upon the health status of the group, so this might be a reason for high premiums. But $700 seems outrageous.
- Is this anywhere in the range of normal?
- Should the company be shopping for a more "reasonable" plan, or could this really just be the result of the groups health status? Additional Details - the company pays employee premiums, but doesn't share dependent premium costs. |

If the employer is passing on the whole cost of spouse coverage to the employee, then its not that unusual. On the higher end, perhaps, but not completely out of line.
(I'm assuming that to add the spouse you're going from single to "family" coverage. "Family" coverage is a flat rate no matter how many people you're adding...you'd pay the same premium if you were adding just your spouse or adding your spouse + 5 kids. Some employers allow for "employee only" pricing, "employee + 1" pricing, and "family" pricing. But many jump straight from "employee only" to "family.")
Honestly, the company is not required to extend the option for coverage to spouses at all. So, their main concern is likely whether or not they can afford the employees premiums. As long as they are satisfied with that aspect of the plan, then they probably don't feel any real need to shop around for other coverage. The spouse/family premiums don't affect them, because they get passed on to the employees.
You may want to inquire to see whether you can find more cost-effective coverage for your spouse somewhere else. I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do about your employer's plan, unless you convince them to switch insurers (which may not change the cost anyhow) or to start picking up some of the tab for dependent coverage. |

It depends on what portion of the premium for your spouse, if any, your employer will pay. That is a matter of company policy. $700 is not out-of-line, however, if the company is not paying any of the premium. |

It's not uncommon to find group insurance 2-3 times the cost of individual coverage. AND, you can run groups at a 2-tier rate which is a rate for one persona and a rate for more than one person (so a husband/wife, parent/child, and family would all be the same, yet higher rate).
Most people make the mistake of not doing the math and they assume that what their employer is offering them is the best deal when that's rarely the case. For you it's an obvious no-brainer. You should talke the work coverage since they pay for it, but you should find something for her elsewhere.
Look on my site you'll see what it would cost to insure her on by herself. Just click on the pickle on the home page. No personal information required to use. |

Well....my first response was "the company must charge a flat amount, regardless of the number of dependents". If so, that would be normal. I have 5 person groups with a cancer that the spouse isn't costing $700. Yes, they should be shopping every year at renewal time.
One thing though, what is your spouse doing right now for insurance? And are they male or female? If male (and healthy), I would put them on an individual plan and save some money. If female, you may be stuck, due to maternity coverage.
Good luck! |

$700 extra per month for one person is absolutely insane! would you or your spouse pay $700/month for an individual policy? probably not! your spouse is probably better off getting an individual policy that would cost $100-200/month.
at my previous job, in michigan where insurance costs are also high, it cost us about $100-150 extra per month to add a spouse to our policy, and that was with many people with major health problems (cancer, etc) that would drive our costs up. just to put it in perspective. |
