urgent | Is Medicare mandatory? |
My mother is going to turn 65 this year, and recieves great insurance through her work. Does she have to apply for Medicare? Thanks in advance. |

She should sign up for Medicare. When she signs up she'll have both Part A and Part B. She can then reject Part B if the situation in the following paragraph applies to her. In most cases there are no premiums for Part A. There generally is a premium for Part B of $96.40 for most people.
If her work insurance has more than 20 lives and she continues to work she does not have to sign up for Part B. She will have an 8 month period after her work insurance stops to sign up for Part B without a penalty.
If her work insurance has fewer than 20 lives or if she retires her work insurance will be secondary to Medicare and she is not allowed to postpone Part B without paying a penalty. If she doesn't sign up for Part B in this situation her premium will increase by 10% for each year enrollment is delayed. |

That great insurance through her work can change at any moment. She needs the Medicare. |

She doesn't have to apply - however, if she doesn't 3 months before she turns 65, she may forgo forever some of the Medicare benefits - which she may miss once she does retire. |

As long as she has group coverage, there is no penalty if she doesn't apply for medicare. But it may help offset some of the out of pocket costs of her group coverage. Here is a link to the medicare webpage with lots of information.
The main link is www.medicare.gov

This depends on her policy. Many insurance companies are forcing their people to sign up for medicare and have the insurance be secondary.
She should call the insurance co and talk to them. They are the only ones that can tell her what the real deal is. |

No, she doesn't HAVE to apply for Medicare, if her current insurer is going to continue to cover her. Heck, even if they won't, she still doesn't have to apply - she can always pay her costs out of pocket! But the main part of Medicare doesn't COST anything. So I don't know why she wouldn't. |
