Is a mechanical failure covered by an auto insurance policy?
is the cost of repairs for a mechanical failure covered by an auto insurance policy? Example: engine or transmission? I have full coverage on my vehicle

mbrcatz
No, mechanical work isn't covered.

"Full coverage" doesn't mean anything - or rather, it's not an insurance term, it means 10 different things to 10 different people. But it doesn't matter, because mechanical breakdown is NEVER covered.

not usually, that is the warranty.........

Mechanical Breakdown is a warranty issue and not an insurance issue. The only thing would be if your engine literally blew up and caused damage to something or injured someone in the area.

Good luck!

MSAD
No. mechanical failure is specifically excluded.

This is because many mechanical failures happen due to lack of maintenance to the vehicle or because of a flaw in the vehicle or just wear and tear.

Your personal automobile insurance covers damage that is sudden and accidental. None of the above are sudden and accidental - so it excludes mechanical failure.

However, say a mechanical failure (your brakes go out) - as a result you lose control of your vehicle and hit a tree. Your insurance policy would not pay for the brakes that went out - but would pay for the sudden and accidental damage caused by hitting the tree.

Typically, no. The purpose of auto insurance is to cover your liability for hurting yourself and your propery and damage to other people and their property. I know of at least one insurance company that offered a rider to their auto policies that protected against mechanical breakdown for a nominal fee - BUT you had to have purchased the car new and signed up for that benefit at that time. And it's a real hassle for auto shops to have to work through insurance companies for claims of that nature.

Mechanical failure is all about maintance.

It is not covered.

Yo' Mama
Mechanical failure is not covered by your auto policy. In the event that you carry comprehensive coverage--which covers such things as fire--and a mechanical failure occured that started a fire that damaged a portion of your car, the resulting fire damage would be covered under your comprehensive coverage. However, the cost to repair or replace the mechanical component that malfunctioned and caused the fire in the first place would not be covered.
