I have cheap health insurance that has a $4,000 deductible. I want to see a doctor. Can I open a new policy with a different company that has a low deductible, go to the doctor, and then cancel the new policy? I will save a lot of money if I do this.

You can have a primary and a secondary insurance. If you are interested in canceling the first policy then you will have to show them that you are currently being covered by another policy. Good luck. |

You can have two policies, but they will co-ordinate benefits. Unless you don't tell them you have two, but they will find out. Trust me. You say you want to see a doctor. Do you have a health problem? If you already have a problem, it can be considered pre-existing and the new insurance would not pay anyway. You need to check it all out before you do anything. Talk to an agent you trust. |

the secondary will SOMETIMES pay the difference
of what's left from the primary. |

Depends on the insurance provider. Some require that you commit to a specified period of time. Is the policy you have open or closed (to a defined network of physicians and hospitals)? Is the secondary insurance plan covering the same physicans and hospitals? You may have multiple plans to cover different circumstances - the first to cover catastophic medical needs and the second for preventive maintenance. |

You can have as many companies as you want, although that would get mighty expensive. HOWEVER, you can only make a primary claim on one, and a secondary claim on the other (for the amount the first one did not pay for). There will be exclusions to all policies and you will be left with something to pay no matter. In other words, you cannot engage in "double dipping." |

Its unlikely that any insurance company is going to issue you a policy if you have a preexisting health condition. And yes, just because you don't know about it, when those claims come in, it will be determined to be preexisting and you will be canceled and responsible for the bills. Its called fraud.
Now if you are perfectly healthy and you for some reason think its cheaper to pay for insurance to get a doctors visit copay for something like a physical, you need to weigh what the cost of that will be versus the actual cost of the physical. And again, if anything is found, you are dead in the water.
Your state laws may govern if you can carry two insurance plans at once, but in most cases, no one cares. |

Yes, and it is often a good idea, A primary insurance carrier and a secondary carrier, the secondary will cover those items that the primary says is your responsibility, including deductibles, copays (often) and hospital expenses not covered by the primary. It is actually very important for Medicare recipients to have a secondary, I recommend AARP. |
