Angelwings | Is an advanced payment from insurance company a "use it or lose it" type of money? |
Our home was damaged by fire and the insurance gave us a substantial advance payment. I'm wondering if we should be a little more liberal in spending it, or will it simply lower the amount we get for the contents of our home? Our housing is already covered separatly by the insurance company, so these funds are pretty much for clothing, etc since we can't access our house. I guess I'm wondering if the advance they gave us is just going against the "loss of use" provision in the policy or against the personal contents provision? Any help would be great. |

Most likely, that advance was a combination of loss of use, and contents. Your adjuster should have given you a piece of paper explaining exactly where it was coming from.
You can use that money to start replacing clothing and other items. Keep all your receipts, and keep tags/boxes for anything you buy. |

If they are calling it an advance, you are right to be skeptical. It will probably be reduced on the back end. Insurance companies will often advance an insured money if they know that they will have to make a large payout in the end (ie: if they know that your claim is worth at least $100k, they have no problem paying you $30k up front, but then this amount is reduced from the final payout) But, if you need it, you need it, and there is nothing wrong with taking it. Just treat it like your own money and do not spend it wildly. |

Call your adjuster or claim representative and ask. You're absolutely right each of those are different coverages on your policy and you should make sure you know what coverage each check is coming from.
Many companies will now pay loss of use directly, you never see the bill for the hotel or rental property it goes straight to the insurance company. Then you fax or mail your food and gas bills and they will reimburse you for those as well. I have a feeling your big check was for personal property but double check with your claims adjuster or claims rep. as each company handles things differently. |

If you had a homeowner's policy and now are having to live somewhere else other than the home - he may have given you an addiitonal living expense which is on most homeowner's policy. I have a feeling that this is what the payment is for. Your best option is to call the adjuster or insurance company and ask. |
