Is buying Long Term Care insurance a good idea at 70 years old and in excellent health?

Chris C
Long term care is a very good idea at age 70. Average life expectancy for a male is around 84 and for a female is around 87.

A lot can go wrong in the next 15-20 years health wise. If he/she is in excelent health that will make it a little cheaper. Find an insruance borker in your area to go over your options...every plan is different...some are reimbursement plans, some are only good if you put them in a home, some are fine for hiring people to come in and some just flat out give you a cheque if you can proof he/she can't perform 2 of the 6 functions of daily living.

Assuming this is a parent or realtive....there is no dignity on either end in a son/daughter having to whip their dad's wrinkley old **** or give him a sponge bath (not a good mental picture, but welcome to reality). Yes, we all love our parents and would do anything for them, but if we had the option to hire someone else to do that 99.9% of the population would pay for the services.

Uh...yes you do get better rates for being in good health. They even give them a name and call it "preferred rates." Not all companies have them, but most do.

If we are to assume that you need the coverage (financially speaking) then the answer is 'yes' you should get it now while you're healthy and CAN get better rates than to wait.

If you are going to get it waiting makes absolutely no sense. The dollars alone are a complete wash. If you got it at 75 you'd be paying 5 less years, but you'd be paying higher rates. Without boring you with interest rates, taxes, etc....just understand that it's a wash. BUT, if you became ill during that 5 years (and had a stroke) you obviously wouldn't be covered AND you'd be unable to get it going forward....and you certainly wouldn't qualify for 'preferred rates.'

So if you're going to get it...don't wait.

You'll have to balance the rates that you'll be paying, vs. the payout. In other words, get the quotes first, understand what it's going to be covering, and THEN make the decision.

Maybe, but at 70 you'll pay very high rates for it - they don't care how good your health is unless you are rejected, you don't get better rates for being in better then average health for your age.
