If the power outage was from a "covered peril" such as....
Windstorm, lightning etc. |

if you have this endorsement on your policy it will and usually without deductible. call your agent or company to find out if you have it |

Typically, the value of your spoiled food will be LESS than your deductable- I would think. I mean, who keeps $500-$1000 worth of parishible food in the fridge/Freezer? In any event, it MIGHT be but probably not worth persuing. |

Excellent question for your insurance company. If you have an active claim (for other damage) ask about this item. If you don't, call the local claims office and ask them about this. Your agent can be helpful as well. Now for the generalities: Food spoliage is generally covered if the cause of the power interruption is from an ON PREMISES interruption. Example, wind knocks down tree which damages your meter or service panel. If the interruption is from OFF PREMISES interruption (out to an entire area), it is generally not covered. Some carriers write expanded or premier endorsements that may add some coverage back in the latter case, and/or increase the coverage in the first case. Again, inquire with your agent and/or carrier to know for sure. If they will cover it, ask them what they would like you to do (can you shoot some digital photos and make an inventory, rather than keeping the stinky spoiled food around if it will take them a few days/weeks to inspect?) Good luck. |

It may be, but they will probably tell you to file a claim with the electric utility first. You might also examine what your policy deductible is. |

You should read your insurance policy or call them to find out for sure. |

Not on the standard policy. Don't forget, you also have a deductible. It IS, however, written into quite a few enhancement endorsements - which you may or may not have. When it's written into an enhancement, usually the deductible is much lower for that coverage (refrigerated food spoilage coverage), or flat out waived.
Bottom line - you have to ask your agent. |

Possibly - It may be covered if the cause of the outage is a covered peril under your policy (ie storm, fire, etc). Check with your agent to be sure. |

With some policies, yes. But its wise to keep up with your policy to know these things because your carriers policy may not be one. |
