Is getting the cheapest possible car insurance a good idea?

You get what you pay for. You can get the cheapest possible, then shoot yourself in the foot if you end up underinsuring your car or your assets.

Sure, some of these companies claim that you can get away with $25/month payments. What they don't tell you is that they BARELY insure you.

If you have any number of assets (ie: car, boat, house, etc) you need to insure at a higher level because you have more to lose.

15/30/5 is what the state minimum is in most states. That translates to $15K per person, $30K per accident, and $5k for property damage. What happens if you hit a bus full of kids? $30K won't go very far for their medical expenses. $5K barely covers a bumper these days....let alone the whole car.

If you don't own property or have a trust fund in the bank, then you could probably "get away" with the cheapest possible car insurance. And you may have the mistaken idea that this is "full coverage". Well, if you fill a Dixie Cup up, and a 5 gallon bucket up...they are both "full", but there is a vast difference between a dixie cup (ie: 15/30/5) and the 5-gallon bucket (ie: 250/500/250) The only thing "full" means is that you have liability AND property (ie: comp and collision for your car).

Just remember...you get what you pay for. If you are only looking at the bottom line but neglect to factor in how much you stand to lose for trying to get off cheap, you will regret it.

NO! You have to balance cost with service. What is the point in saving a couple of bucks if you can't even get questions answered when then come up, or have lousy claims service. I think its best to still find something reasonably priced, but with a company that offers local agents. Its really helpful to be able to stop in or make a simple call to make changes, as opposed to running though an automated loop and hooking into some call center. Plus, having an agent helps a lot as your life changes, as you sometimes can build a face to face relationship with them.

You get what you pay for.
If you are in an accident, do you want someone local who can help you, or do you want an 800 number which will be answered by someone you never heard of.
Also, with minimum coverage, suppose you are clearly in the wrong, do they pay out what they're liable for , and say, " we did our part, the rest is your problem," or will they try to defend you??
Shop and compare: See for your self just how much ins coverage from a local agent will cost.

Well, it's better than nothing. Barely. But if you cause an accident, the insurance only has to pay up to the limit of coverage. YOU have to pay the rest.

So generally, if you CAN afford more, you should get more.
